a nurse's medicine cabinet

What do you all have in your medicine cabinets? I'm not talking about personal prescriptions, but rather OTC meds and supplies to always have on hand.

Pretty much what santhony said ...

Benadryl tabs & cream, hydrocortisone cream, antibiotic ointment, ibuprofen, 81mg ASA, immodium, and OTC acid reducer. Different sizes of gauze & tape. Ace bandages. Saline to flush eyes. Alcohol swabs & peroxide.

anything i can get my hands on that might be even remotely useful at some future stage

Specializes in Med-Surg/Peds/O.R./Legal/cardiology.

Same as the others plus steri-strips and pepto bismol. I think pepto-bismol may just cure cancer, BTW! :rotfl:

So basically, except for sidney =), the same stuff we had before obtaining a nursing education. I feel like I should have a lot of other stuff for some reason. And maybe a car emergency kit.

What do you use to clean out your kids wounds? I know peroxide and alcohol are not the choices. When I got to follow wound care I was trying to figure out what the nurse was using to clean the wounds before applying new dressings. Anything in particular you can reccomend from the store? It didn't seem to sting at all.

not a nurse yet but I keep Benadryl, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, claritin and children's versions of all of these. I also like to have theraflu on hand. (When I am really sick this stuff knocks me right out)

Specializes in midwifery, NICU.

Basically all the same sort of stuff, but now my kiddos are grown, they laugh looking back at the first aid box of their childhood. For the constant falls, a good wash of the afflicted area, some "magic" cream..(Savlon), A great big kiss and cuddle, and a cheesy dunker to eat!! Worked miracles! Unless your leg was hanging off, these remidies were a cure all!.. And they are healthy and happy..guess it worked!! :yeah:

Specializes in Nursing Home ,Dementia Care,Neurology..

Paracetamol,Nurofen,Gaviscon,Forflu,Cavonia(cough mixture)tastes terrible ,but works well!Dettol or Savlon for cleaning cuts etc.Elastoplast dressings,Mepore dressings,Deep heat for aches and pains,Optrex for soothing sore eyes and various things like olive oil for ears, clove oil for teeth. Also carry to work newskin which is a liquid dressing as plasters just fall off me especially when I am working and washing my hands all the time.

Specializes in Dialysis, Nephrology & Cosmetic Surgery.

For a nurse I have to have the worst stocked medicine cabinet I know of. All I have is some paracetamol (tylenol) and piriton because I had an insect bite lat summer. No plasters or other dressings, no antiseptic, the only other items I have are out of date half used heparins - I used to put the half used ampules in my pocket when I worked at a satellite unit many years ago - I know terrible pratice and it wouldn't happen now - I keep meaning to take them into work to dispose of properly but they are still there.
