Nurses: which job would you take if you were desperate new grad?

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Would you move far away from your family and live on your own in New Mexico as a nurse technician making 11.35/hr ? ( The job is meant for nursing students) Not really for RN grads

OR

would you stay home and take the 2 offers that you have: nursing home and home care?

Which job do you think would give you better skills and make you a better candidate for hospital nursing? :uhoh3:

Specializes in Pediatrics.

agree with everyone else, take a job where you actually get to be a RN!

I don't understand why anyone with a license and RN job offers close to home would move to take the non nursing job that pays less. Is this a trick question?

Specializes in Med/Surg.

Any RN experience is better than no RN experience. I personally would take the nursing home job and get my experience.

Specializes in Wound Care, LTC, Sub-Acute, Vents.
i work on med/surg with several rns who started in ltc. they all have excellent assessment and time management skills, and are great at prioritizing.

thank you! i do not understand what is wrong about ltc nursing. yes now that i am an rn, i want to try hospital nursing but i learned so much from working ltc in the past 2 years (lpn).

yes there are so many things that need fixing with ltc nursing but i make it work. but who isn't? is the hospital really the "perfect" job?

just like what you said i have excellent time management and prioritizing skills and great (not excellent :D) assessment skills.

op, have you even worked or stepped your foot in a nursing home? why don't you try it for now and see how it goes. i cannot believe you are even considering moving out of state for 11 bucks and for a tech position when you are an rn.

good luck job hunting!

angel, rn

This is a no brainer question. PERIOD!!!!.

As a new grad myself I have had several offers from hosptials to come move there to be a tech with the promise of an RN spot in the next residency/internship etc. They lure you in with the promise of your dream RN hospital job. Of course, none of them would give me that promise in writing.......OP if this is the type of situation you are in ask for it in writing. Otherwise go with the LTC job. Home Health is too dangerous for a new grad, not enough resources if you need help or a second pair of eyes to look at something.
