Ditto. When we first moved in USA and applied for Medical for out baby daughter it was denied, eventhough only my husband was employed at the time and his income was barely above the "required". The Denial came a week after we had to rash to to ER(2 days of fever, she is 5 month, breastfed, and started throwing up at mignight) stating that temporary coverage was ended ONE day before ER trip. Wha? And then, in a few days, we get 6,000$ bill from the hospital ,which we couldn't pay, cause, well, I was a stayhome mom and my hubby is not an engeneer.:) So yeah, the hospital won't deny you service but u better believe it they'll bill you. Can't afford to pay, well=goodbay credit history, which is what we have right now. Bad credit. In US u r doomed basically. I am Russian-Canadian trained nurse so have experienced and can compare health care in 3 contries (counting US o/c).
Responding to poster who was saying that most people who say health care is expensive spend money on iphone crap etc. Well, here is one that don't. Mother of 2. Both, me and my hubby, working full time jobs like any dutifull citizens.
This is a touch untrue. I have been to an ER and didnt have health care at the time. I received the bill and then called the hospital and set up payments with them. They were very flexible with me because I told them they can either get the money in payments or I could be trying to get out of it. But I am responsible and made my payments.
Im glad you are working two jobs. But babies are expensive and dont happen by accident. And you did use the ER so you should pay for it. Also, if you are doomed in this country what brought you here? Not too many people will move their family to a place that isnt beneficial for them

When I first moved here (to join my husband) I had NO idea whatsoever re: health care system in place here. Guess I wasn't prepared for it. I had my baby in Canada and was pampered from the time she was born (nurse visits for a week after birth(mother and baby assesments,24 h nurse phone line, nurse clinics open 6 days a week, so if u have a concern u could stop by anytime(weight, growth, breastfeeding concerns, etc, etc. ) so when we came here and my fist encounter was the one described above I was speechless. We appied for Medical for my daughter because at that time only my husband was working(I stayed at home with baby on maternity leave)and they gave her temp coverage, so we went to ER with our blue and white Medical card, thinking she is covered. Big surprise. Apparently she was covered all the time we were in US BUT until a day before ER?? Re: payments and working it out, believe me, we've been through that circle, speaking to hospital, going from social worker, to social worker trying to figure out what happened. I felt that upon admission to the hospital at least it could've been mentioned to us if the coverage was closed 1 day before?Instead they took such a long time in admission process verifiing benefits etc, then, after 2 hours in waiting room admited us and then..pay up.but but she had medical.too bad so sad.
Thanks for clarifying. I wouldn't say that babies r expensive though, especially breastfed, if you don't have to take them to ER without insurace, I can assure you, they are not a financial burden. Older kids, on the other hand..but we do at this time, thank G, both have jobs and can support them, so Im also not complaining.:)Im glad you are working two jobs. But babies are expensive and dont happen by accident.

I feel as if you're twisting my words. What I said was,
meaning if you don't have a good credit history in this country, you're doomed (by that I mean -forget about buying car, house, even getting credit card,etc.).Bad credit. In US u r doomed basically.

Yeah I read that part wrong. Sorry about that. Credit does own all. The hospital wouldnt let you make payments to them for the ER visit?

I'm hoping that as part of financial reform, there will be renovation of credit reporting. I absolutely refuse to pay incorrect bills. I know I'm swimming upstream with that one, as companies that have overcharged, or dug up an ancient bill that I had paid years ago, I refuse to honor them. The collections callers aren't supposed to threaten to do harm to your credit score, but they do, anyway. It's pathetic, the way those nasty callers do that, state that they'll take it out of your bank account, etc. Their company gets 50% of whatever comes in as a result of those calls, and many people just pay them, so they don't get dinged by Fair Isaac, the tabulator of the scores from the big three tattlers.
It's true that you can't buy/finance a house or car, get a charge card, etc. once that score goes below some magic number; and now employers check it, when people apply for jobs and require that you tell them your social security number before your interview is even scheduled! Reform of the financial system is as overdue as it was for the health care system.
I wonder how many people who voted "no" in the poll on this topic, had actually read the Reform of health care Act online. So many of us believe what others tell us that their judgment of such matters is. Doctors and hospital administrators are invested in maintaining their current overpayment for their services, backed by insurance and pharmaceutical companies... so consider where they're coming from before believing their objections.
That credit system assures that no one enjoys privacy any longer, and I just won't play their game. If everyone refused too, they'd go out of business. Banks will tell anyone what activity there has been there, for anyone. What also bugs me, is that checks you present for cashing, are "held" (ostensibly until the funds go around the world and return to your bank - usually 5-10 days). Meanwhile the bank collects on the funds in checks you presented for payment, that have been given to you, the night after you presented them and use YOUR money to meet THEIR debts!
The financial companies are bucking like spooked steers, but this is their day of reckoning. President Obama has returned power to the people. The initial bills may seem paltry, but they are a toe in the door of legislation with the plan to eventually get everything needed, through. There's so much opposition, which is in the form of lies to distract voters, false assumptions, etc. all presented to preserve companies that donate campaign monies and beholden politicians can't get out of the pockets of their backers.
The time is now, to stop all that. You can help to accomplish that, by making an effort to clear up all erroneous listings in your credit report, using your credit cards less, if at all to avoid huge interest rates and late charges, etc. It lessens big banks' power, to use smaller community banks. It's obscene that Fair Isaac, et al takes points off if you don't charge something each month, and then pay it in time (which is sometimes 2 weeks later).
if the government was so good at providing health care why is medicaid and medicare such a mess?????
This has nothing to do with Dems vs Reps, it's the government as a whole! I am proud to be American but this is going to cost us America! We already owe everyone and their brother and this is going to make it that much worse.
On what basis have you judged Medicare and Medicaid as being "in a mess"?
How did you come to the conclusion that the reform of health care will "cost us America"? That sounds like Republican rhetoric to me..... Before you can conclude that there isn't enough money to cover the expenses, you must know how much additional money will be collected from those making over $250,000/year (unless you know how many people make more than that, and how much more they make, it's impossible to know; and how much less the prevention programs will end up costing us, due to timely diagnosis, and less costly treatment, as well as the continued presence of parents in the home, to care for their children, if that's the case. No one knows that, yet. However there are estimates regarding how much more funding there will be for health care, and those who know say that it will help reduce this country's debt.
Basically people believe those who have their respect. It's been a forgone conclusion that doctors elicit that response, and they've been dreading and belly aching about reform of health care since Barack Obama was elected as President. Their days of making indecent sums of money without restraint, are over. So the only way they can promote public concern about it, is to spread fear about the cost. Those who charged fraudulent amounts, abusing the Medicare system have been responsible for the waste of money on that program. The monitored billing allowed by the reform of health care act, will avoid such practises in the future. Further contributions to Medicare and the taxation of extremely monied persons (including doctors, most of whom fall in the group of highearners) will cover its expenses, with additional amounts that will lessen the country's financial deficit.
There have been few if any laws that have been perfect, when first implemented. More tweaking and development of programs will be indicated, with subsequent changes. There has to be a starting point, before needs for additional provisions can be made. What was most crucial to allow change to be encountered, was that congress pass the initial act. Improvements based on findings from its implimentation, will occur. It is a work in progress, now.
I am not happy with the way the bill was passed, hurried through without even being read. I don't feel that health care for all is feasable without Tort-reform. The only way we as a society can afford to pay for everyone's health care is to NOT waste. It is common to "treat the attorney" and not the patient. The medical personnel make decisions on clinical presentation, but unless we have a lab test, CT or MRI to prove what we already know...you get the drift. We waste too much, we over treat and over spend....need Tort reform first.

Definitely NO..
1) The national debt- If you are unaware of this problem just look up the clock, almost 13 trillion now. As I am a young person my generation will be left with paying of this huge burden. I ask you how will the government provide care to more people yet reduce the cost. To think that this will not raise govt' spending exponentially seems blindingly optimistic.
2) The government's job is to protect its citizens. Not to provide for them. I believe the quote is "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." I don't know where so many people got the idea that the government is supposed to provide for them when they are having a hard time. That is what charities are for. If sympathy and empathy are the reasons you want healthcare reform you can always volunteer your time or donate your money. Taxing people who make money to provide for people who don't is not the American dream and not the reason why I am getting a college education. I understand that people fall on hard times but the helping hand should come from friends, families, and charities. Not from taxpayers.
3) If as nurse I work and make enough money to provide for myself I will be taxed to pay for healthcare for those who are not able to provide for themselves. They will take this money and come receive treatment at the hospital I work at and the government will pay the bill. The hospital will take the money and pay me... then the cycle starts all over again. This to me seems like the government making me volunteer to work an hour a day for free to pay for others.
I am not the most poetic speaker so i'll leave you with the people who say it best.
Thomas Jefferson -A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have."
Thomas Jefferson- "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."
and my favorite
Benjamin Franklin- "When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic."
