Nurses eat their Young

Published

So there have been many posts on the subject, and I was wondering what your thoughts were on the subject. At my job, there are a few, nurses you have to take with a grain of salt, otherwise you'll go insane. They're really hard on the new nurses that come into the door, and I was one of them. But since I've been there for some time, i start seeing myself get upset when i see things done wrong, or poorly written (we do not have computers at all and yes its 2011 i know). And I write them notes telling them i fixed what they had done and explain the correct way of doing that particular task. But after the 5th or 6th note its like COME ON!!!

Thoughts???

Be nice!

I hate that nurse's eat their young. When i started, some nurses attempted to tare me down. The way i went about this could be seen as... umm different? I went absolutely ballistic on these nurses, i took them down infront of everyone at the nurse's station, it lets everyone know that your not someone they can mess with. One of them rolled her eyes at me in report and told me a piece of information i provided wasn't valid. I launched back in a tirade yelling throwing my book on the floor literally screaming! She went bright red in the face and now writes everything i say down. But you bet the next time she did report i challenged nearly every single piece of information she handed over. Just because i'm a new grad doesn't mean i'm a pushover is the moral of this story! haha

Please tell me this is a bad joke. There's a big difference between not allowing yourself to be treated badly and acting like a complete idiot.

Yawn.

1) You need a spelling & grammar lesson.

2) If you did this to me you it would be your face that would be red because it would be the end of your infantile career.

That is all.

And you think this was professional behavior, especially for a new grad???

Honey, I certainly agree with XT, Aurora, Neo and Ruby, all well respected, experienced and highly professional nurses who post frequently on this board.

This was a study in juvenile and yes, bullying behavior.

Your colleague is probably writing every thing you say down in order to build her case in reporting you because if you continue down this path, it's only a matter of time until somebody does....not because of your "pearls" of wisdom...believe me, I doubt that you have anything to say worth writing down....

And don't challenge every thing she says in report...the point you will be making is that your ignorance is showing...

and that's the moral of this story...............haha!

(and yes, it would behoove you to learn to spell and perhaps take a remedial grammar class)

and they wonder why we "eat our young".............................back to the original story......just when you think you can put this "dead horse" to rest, another one like this pops up!!! It never ends.......

And what kind of professional behavior are you showing by yelling and throwing a temper tantrum?

Because that's EXACTLY what you did! That is so not professional, no matter what the other "experienced" nurse said to you. She probably got red in the face because she was embarrassed FOR you.

And if you would have done that to me, I would have pulled you in the manager's office so quick and we would have had a come-to-Jesus meeting right in front of the manager. And I would have loved to see how you would have responded in front of the manager.

There are ways to stand up for yourself (if you were being "attacked") and then there are ways of making yourself look like a bully. What you did was the latter.

And best believe she is writing everything down you say because she is going back and double checking your work so she can build a case against you.

Going ballistic is hardly the mature way to deal with your problems

What you have shown to everyone is that are unwilling to take critism, be a team member or accept that you don't know it all.

Better start looking for a new job, cause you won't have this one for long.

Where I work, behavior like that would get you fired. Congratulate yourself all you want, but you did not handle this in a professional manner

Yep, had a brand new nurse smack her hands down on the table during report and yell how things have got to stop. Working in psych can be difficult and she wasn't coping too well with the pts. She then went on to tell us how she went to the DON and had a talk with her and that things would be changing. They sure did change. Within a month they went after her and almost fired her. If it wasn't for me and another nurse who vowed to reteach and give some subtle advice to, she would have been gone.

She now keeps her opinions to herself. Asks for adivice and is able to calm herself down. Nobody likes anyone going off the deep end. You don't come across as being stable. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if you get fired sooner or later.

As a new nurse you have so much to learn. Period. You will not be able to learn a thing with your less than stable way that you present yourself.

If you did that in my facility, the police would be escorting you out the door. And the BON would be notified.
