Nurses eat their Young

So there have been many posts on the subject, and I was wondering what your thoughts were on the subject. At my job, there are a few, nurses you have to take with a grain of salt, otherwise you'll go insane. They're really hard on the new nurses that come into the door, and I was one of them. But since I've been there for some time, i start seeing myself get upset when i see things done wrong, or poorly written (we do not have computers at all and yes its 2011 i know). And I write them notes telling them i fixed what they had done and explain the correct way of doing that particular task. But after the 5th or 6th note its like COME ON!!!

Thoughts???

I think it's more that some nurses forget what it was like to be eager and full of textbook knowledge, but totally lacking the experience to back it up. There's a disconnect and lacking between nursing school and work that takes years to master. And some people are just cold or mean in their demeanor and their corrections come off less constructive.

That being said, this topic is way overdone. I'm sick of talking about it in these terms. "Horizontal violence" will find you some great articles if you're interested in searching.

As you said, there are many posts on this topic. I suggest typing your title in the search box and reading the threads that come up. No sense in starting a brand new thread when the same thoughts that you are looking for have been published in multiple threads (over and over and over and...)

It seems to be that, at my job, the young are eating the old. I guess what comes around goes around... I welcome student nurses and the new nurses, always have, but it feels to me that my old ways and old knowledge and values are pretty much useless anymore. I'm just barely hanging on, now...

I can't work anymore, but definitely sense the 'useless' stuff. I enjoy doing what I can to help students on the student forums. (WHEN they have initiated the work, and are looking for feedback/direction :up:).

Well, just remember how that mean nurse made you feel and don't forget that feeling. Be nice to new nurses and treat them how u wanted to be treated when u were new!!

I love advice and tricks of the trade as it were from nurses who have been doing the job since before I was born! But then again I'm also the one who welcomes parenting advice from little old ladies and will go to her grandmas who raised 5 and 6 kids before I go to a parenting mag.

That said, I'm sure there are old eating their young in every profession. Aren't doctors really hard on newbies and students?

Leaving notes for other nurses correcting them can easily be misconstrued as condescending. I suggest that you respectfully speak to coworkers directly when you have issues. If the coworker continues to do things "incorrectly" then you should follow the chain of command until proceedures are done correctly. Sometimes new nurses just receive poor training at the hands of bad management.
