FNPs! What area were you in when you were a nurse?

Specialties NP

Hi. I have been working in med/surg for 7 years. Just started FNP. I have been doing just adults. I am not sure whethere or not I want to work in a clinic or doctor's office, or acute hospital setting. I feel like it is better to have other experience. I am thinking about doing peds.

FNPs!!!! Please share with me. What kind a nurse were you (peds/adults/meds/tele/ER/ICU...) and where do you work(clinic/office/hospital...)

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

My nursing exp was 10 yrs level one trauma center ER and 1 yr adult ICU. The ER exp was invaluable.

ER exp was invaluable? Wow!! I wonder what you do now!!

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I actually work in nephrology but have done locums and I still volunteer on my local rural fire dept.

Specializes in FNP, ONP.

20 years as a RN: med-surg, critical care, trauma ED, flight nursing, admin, education. The majority in critical care/flight/trauma.

Now FNP in a family practice clinic, light years away from all of that. I have moved on and don't care if I never set foot in a hospital again.

Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, Bangladesh, Thailand, New Mexico, Kansas

Whaaaaaaat!! Are you a travel nurse? Fun!!! I don't know if I should go to adult ICU or peds.. Any suggestion? I like both setting, clinics and hospital. What do you think?

Nope, but you asked what "area" I was in, not what "unit" or "nursing setting."

I was in CCU/cardiac rehab at the time and forced myself to go work PRN in the ER. I hated pretty much every minute but used my time to study up on abdominal pain/gyn issues and other stuff I had never really been around. Of course I didn't get any procedures and such but I used the time to study up on the thought process that went into the orders for these patients.

I am about to do the same thing that you did. I am forcing myself to work peds or ICU. Peds is not my best interest but I kind of think that I should be about to assess children if I want to work in clinic.

At first Med/Surg Tele, then Travel in cardiac stepdowns and finally O.R scrub/circulating for the past several years..

OR was my goal. I really wanted to work in OR setting. I even shadowed one nurse. I had 3 interview for 3 different hospitals. They all rejected me. As soon as I said I was in school, they was like "what!!!" They didn't think that I could focus on working because I was in school. My goal is to become surgical NP. Oh well... They may be right. I may not be able to keep up study and work with on calls, orientation, and etc.. Are you a surgical NP?
