Is it uncommon for someone to have am interest in family nurse practitioner and psych nurse practitioner and also want to receive an MSN in education? Do you know of any nurses with FNP, Psych NP, MSN Ed? Just wondering because these are all fields I have an interest in.

Well, I am currenlty in FNP school...Correct me if Im wrong, but I believe you can teach with an FNP degree. A professor of mine had her MSN in FNP. Also, cant you obtain the psych qualificiation/certification if you finish your FNP? Just seems like you could kill a couple of birds with one stone, if you're interested in all those areas. I dont know though, just my thoughts! Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

If you are a FNP then you can teach with that qualification (because you will probably have at least an MSN) and at some point you can take more classes and get a psych certification (depending on what your going to do with it) and then at some point if you wish to go back and get a doctorate you could get a doctorate in Nursing Education too if you want.

My plan is to get my FNP and nurse educator certificate simultaneously (it is only a few extra classes for the educator cert). Once I am in practice if I am seeing a lot of psych patients, I might get the post masters certificate for PMHNP. I decided not to go that route straight away because I feel the FNP opens up more doors for me. I have also heard that the PMHNPs do mostly med management and not much therapy, which would be my main interest in being a psych NP, so that was a turn off from doing the PMHNP alone.

From what I have seen in my area in the classifieds (there are several well-known colleges/universities around here), most prefer you to have your MSN/PhD and be some type of NP. I imagine because that way, they can utilize you not only for the undergrad programs, but also for the grad programs, too.
ETA: I have not seen one university job description that has asked for specifically an MSN in nursing education. They have specified for NPs, though.

That's been my experience, too -- position postings for faculty positions usually specify what specific clinical specialty they're looking for, and want you to have the advanced practice certification (not necessarily as an NP, but one of the advanced practice roles) in your specialty. I've not yet seen a faculty position posting specifically looking for someone with a degree in nursing education.

Is there an option for a post masters in phych? That might be more useful..All of the listing near me ask for a MSN. The few extra classes and extra money might not be necessary for the educato certr.
