Hello fellow nurses!
So I am volunteering at a kids boxing match and I was just curious if kidsany of u guys have done this type of work before. I'm sure some on the things I'll be dealing with are possible concussions, lacerations ect. I've never really seen a kids boxing match so I don't know what to expect. Your input/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I'd be more concerned about parents depending on the age group. Parents an be brutal Do you know the expected ages? That will make a difference. I'd expect bruises, lacerations, epistaxis, black eyes, hopefully mouth guards & protective head gear and athletic supporters are required Will the group supply ice & a first aid kit (not all do, they assume the medical volunteers will supply their own)? Brush up on basic first aid and bring your cell if 911/hospital transport is needed. Make certain your personal malpractice/liability is up to date. Even for a volunteer stint.
Current recommendations are usually refer any possible concussion to the ED for eval in kids. Keep a log of anyone you see, injury, treatment offered/administered and any referrals made.

The ages are from 5-18, thanks for your help, I never really thought about bringing my own first aid kit, I'll have to look into that.
I'd bring some zippy bags, a cooler of ice, and you can get gauze & band aids from the local dollar store.

No...I haven't, and I am REALLY intrigued...I never though of a kindergartener getting in the ring...Just Beachy gave you great information...I would bring those items as described.

Who is running (sanctioning) this event? Are there release of liability forms signed? Does this gropup have a trainer and will they be there? Call your liability (malpractice carrier) to ensure you will be covered for this event/volunteer opportunity. Inquire if they are providing any first aid supplies.
I would make sure you have gloves.....ice....paper towels to wrap the ice in for it shouldn't be placed directly on the skin. Bandaids....bacitracin etc....Beachy is right keep a log. You cannot give ANY meds.....not even Tylenol. You can have it available for the parents to give but you may not administer.
Find out if any of the children have any health issues ahead of the time when they are in the ring. Find out if there is an AED and where it is stored. Some kling/kerlex wrap and gauze and 4x4's maybe ab ace wrap or two. A couple of slings and arm boards although a magazine can immobilize a wrist in a pinch
You are giving BASIC FIRST AID only you are not functioning as a nurse per say. Maintain C-spine precautions
Call 911 for LOC is my vote for you can't make that call that they are ok. Remember to be aware of cervical injuries, head injuries.
As a trained ER nurse.....IF I volunteer I make it clear I do ICE and immobilize and call 911....like any other parent....and I'll be there in case something really bad happens....but not as a "nurse"....per say...I will be the first responder and know how to call 911.....on a side note I have always carried a pocket CPR mouth protector in my purse for I don't do mouth to mouth.

Please tell me that these kids aren't actually punching each other until one of them is knocked out....
