Hi Everyone, I'm planning to apply for the HRSA NurseCorp Scholarship this year. I figured I would go ahead and start the next thread for this award year. I'm currently finishing up some of my prereqs and will be starting my BSN program in June. I know the application date hasn't been released yet but from what I have seen on other threads, it should be opened sometime in March/April with a deadline in May. I've also read that the prompt questions have been the same from one award year to the next so I have begun working on them as well as trying to figure out who I would like to use as recommendations. I would love to hear from all who plan to apply this year.
So I just re-read the part in the application guide that any written off debt will make you ineligible for this award, i thought it was only federal debt but it says non-federal as well. I have one closed credit card account for $1200 that I got when I was 19 and didn't know what I was doing. I've paid everything else on time since then and never knew how to take care of it so I just left it alone. Is that something that could disqualify me? I didn't even consider it would be a problem until right now.
Once any debt is charged off, the entry on your credit report remains for a period of 7 years. If you contact the company and pay them today the only thing that would change on your credit report would be that the amount owed would change to reflect $0. (The amount owed could already be $0 if they have sold the debt to any other company.)
According to the guidelines of the Nurse Corps program, a default on any federal debt would automatically disqualify a candidate from receiving assistance. However, the application guidelines do state that any defaulted debt federal and/or non-federal MAY be considered for selection of award.
Unfortunately, they receive many more applications every year from more candidates then they can even hope to award. Everyone that reaches the stage of consideration of an award gets their credit pulled and reviewed. If there are candidates with everything equal, they will chose someone with no credit defaults over anyone that does have a credit blemish. There are numerous internet threads running as early as 2014 that I found that discuss that people have been denied simply based on defaulted credit cards, cell phone bills, electric bills, medical bills, etc.
I called about this before even applying. They are not looking at credit card debt. They are looking at any debt with the government, any mortgage, student loan, child support, court ordered payment. There are not multiple threads about people being denied because of a failure to pay a credit card, because no one knows why they are not chosen. They receive a rejection email and reasons are not given. They choose based upon scores assigned to each section of your application, and then check credit to make sure there are no defaults or failure to pay any government obligation. It does say non-federal too, but that is like state debts, like taxes, child support, court orders, etc. Please stay positive. The application opened much later than it ever has.
A couple of people who applied for the NHSC scholarship on SDN logged into their portals this morning and their status was changed to finalist for award. Hopefully, that means we will have credit checks run this week, and be notified in the next couple weeks... deadlines and decisions are weighing on me...

From what everyone has said, they only check your federal debt regarding schools, so I'm not sure 100%
We'll have to wait to find out because even if you call, they're clueless
