2018 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi all,

I've been reading up on the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program and looks like in past years, threads have been started for the yearly application process. I'll be applying as a Staff RN (non-faculty) working at a DSH with an HPSA Score of 16. Not sure of my DTI percentage yet. Hoping to connect with others that will be applying to the program next month and we can all share our updates here. Best of luck to everyone!

I am a staff RN and am not sure what my Hospitals HPSA score is. I have not been able to find it.

I had my credit checked 4/20 and this is my first year applying.

My status still says "Under Review"

Specializes in NICU, Peds, Mother/Baby.

Still waiting it out with my fingers crossed! Anyone not a NP receive an email yet?

I'm in an NP haven't heard anything.. it's a little bit weird that no one else has heard anything !!!!

I applied to the Nurse Corps loan repayment program as NP in VA medical center. This is my 2nd year applying and first time having credit run by Credco approximately April 17 DTI 177% but psych score like 15 I think. Very little hope. Good luck all.

I'm a family nurse practitioner, HPSA score is 19 (they re-evaluated it and it went up 5 points this year - yay)! DTI is 145%. Credco check in April and May. 2nd year applying to both Nurse Corps and NHSC loan repayment programs - got email this morning from HRSA to confirm interest for the NHSC!

Congratulations Sarahtrokey

Congrats! I wish I could figure out how they are awarding!! So anxious over here !

Specializes in Family practice, emergency.

Congrats Sarahtrokey!!!

This wait is so aggravating. Lord have mercy

Congratulations those who have been awarded. I would like to know yay or nay so I can make other arrangements.

Hello Everyone, I thought I would tell you my story perhaps it will help some of you. I know first hand how intense and nerve racking this process can be. I applied in 2012 and was awarded that first year applying. I had a HPSA score of 17 and a DTI score of >200. Great you think. NO!!. The hospital I was at was having problems and cutting staff, to make a long story short it was in my best interest to quit before perhaps being fired. Alabama is a "right to work state" you can quit and not give any reason and an employer can fire you and give no reason. I got another job with another hospital in the same city within days. I had to turn down the award because I had changed hospitals in April, I was awarded in June. My new hospital had the same HPSA score. I applied for the next four years. Each year was more depressing as I was not awarded again and again. I spoke with the portal and was told I might be awarded again and I might never be awarded again. In 2016 on the last day possible (Sept ?) I cannot remember the final date for award now, I checked the portal and actually jumped up and praised God. I was awarded. At that time my HPSA score was still 17 but my DTI ratio was 151%. I was making more money and had paid on the loans for 4 years. Yes I had taken a few forbearances on time. I believe if I had not gotten it that year I would not have gotten it ever as my DTI ratio would have fallen below 150%. After taxes on the loan amounts which you can claim on your tax return, I get 1162.00 a month. Everyone's will be different depending on what they owe. Please don't ask me how much I owed, TOO MUCH!!

This year 2018 I am applying for a 3rd year. I have had the credit check last week. The 3rd year is a little different you have till April 25 to apply. Do not think it gets easier applying I had to fight like crazy this year to not be eliminated because my loan payments transferred to the site just fine but my lenders don't allow your name to show. I had to take screen shots of all my loans payments to two lenders with my cell phone and send them in to an analyst requesting the info and giving my 2 days to get it in, and I got the e-mail on the last day I had (I don't check my e-mail everyday). First time I sent it faxed (they never got it and never told me) imagine that! The second request 2 weeks later gave me till close of business that day to get it in. I politely sent that analyst an email explaining all I had gone through to get the first request faxed to her, the fact she never responded to two e-mails telling her I had faxed it, and that her request giving me one day was "unacceptable" my exact words. I then called the portal, spoke with someone, told my story and they put in a request to another analyst for investigation and follow up. I need to mention here that the first analyst e-mails never gave me a number to call her back directly, only a phone number back to the portal. A few days later I got an e-mail with an apology stating she never received my fax and a request to e-mail her the documents. I did this and the same day my application was sent on to the final review person. I am still waiting to see if I get awarded for a 3rd year or not. The award of 25% for the 3rd year is on the original amount of your loans when you got the first award not what is left so it is very much worth it. My advice to all of you. NEVER GIVE UP, KEEP APPYING. KEEP FIGHTING FOR WHAT YOU NEED. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET AN E-MAIL, CHECK THE PORTAL AND YOUR E-MAIL EVERYDAY NOW. SOMETIMES THEY WILL E-MAIL YOU AND SOMETIMES IT WILL JUST BE ON THE PORTAL LIKE MINE WAS. YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW DAYS AFTER GETTING THE AWARD TO ACCEPT IT OR IT WILL BE FORFEITED, BE VIGILANT. GREAT LUCK EVERYONE. Staff RN. Mary Ann

Thank you heartandhere for words of encouragement and guidance on where to check.
