2018 Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program

Published

Hi all,

I've been reading up on the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program and looks like in past years, threads have been started for the yearly application process. I'll be applying as a Staff RN (non-faculty) working at a DSH with an HPSA Score of 16. Not sure of my DTI percentage yet. Hoping to connect with others that will be applying to the program next month and we can all share our updates here. Best of luck to everyone!

I have applied 3 times. I am new to comments so I do not know any of these acronyms. I have over $70k in loans. I have always worked for FQHCs and plan to continue. I started in '99 , pregnant and a single mother, my wife is also a nurse and she has $20 k in loans. We couldn't work on hers since she was the only one working for me to do my ADN and MSN for many years and we got behind on basic bills. Were just trying to keep our head above water. Our income looks high on paper, but it flys out the window when you start paying bills. Its ok , we are making it, but to wipe these loans out would help. I love where I work, I'm staying for the duration and would NEVER work anywhere else. Maybe I need to write a better cover letter??? I don't recall if it includes one now. I will pay attention next year and if it does I will include ALLLLLL these details!

So even if you don't have $200k in loans, you can get turned down. Which is fine if they would just say this is a totally random award and not continue to claim that it's need based. But I do feel your pain.

Where do they claim it's need based?

The $50k disbursement should not be included as income per both the NHSC and IRS. It is 100% tax free.

Thank you so much for helping me locate this information! It would be more of a burden if the $50,000 payment was included as income and because it is not, it is a huge relief. This is my second year applying and I got the NHSC contract. Last year I applied for the Nurse Corps LRP program and was denied. I do believe the Nurse Corps LRP program uses the dept to income ratio to help determine who gets the award along with a few other factors.

I received my denial a couple days ago, Your overall application status is: Not Selected For Award

I was an RN, HPSA 17, D/I 190%

Next year here I go!!

Good luck and congrats to all.

Has anyone received their first payment?

Still waiting for my first payment as well. I rec'd my acceptance and welcome packet email August 31st (contract start date 8/31). Judging from the 2017 thread, I'm hoping we'll get our first payments by mid-October!

I messaged HRSA and was told we would get the disbursement for September and October sometime this month...but they didn't have a date.

Anyone know how it works for payment if all your loans are not related to your nursing degree? Instead of making monthly payments like we have been that goes towards all of our loans, is there a way to just make payments that go toward the nursing ones? I don't want to make the same payments I've been making because currently I'm paying on loans that weren't just for my nursing. Thanks!

Hi SuccessCNM,

Your award letter should have the loans listed which are to be included in your repayment. You are only allowed to use the HRSA funds to cover those specified loans. I have nursing loans with Navient and Great Lakes, and was told by HRSA representative that I could only use the funds for Great Lakes since that's the loan company that is listed on my award letter. Hope this is helpful.

Has anyone received their first deposit? I was finalized as of September 6 and still no deposit.
