How do you deal with a nurse who is slamming things, condescending, humiliating, lying, harrasing other nurses, yelling at coworkers, cussing, complaining, changing her pt assignment before her coworkers come in for the shift and generally disrespectful?
This seems to be the way she has chosen to put fear in other nurses over the years, so that she feels as if she is in power.
Nothing seems to have been done over the years, just talking to her.
are her initials j.s.? or do you mean to tell me - horrors :chair: - there are more out there like her!
i worked with that queen of the bullies as my charge nurse for 3 years. seriously don't know how i kept myself from strangling her. but both the manager and the floor supervisor were her best friends - so she got away with it for that long. until they quit - finally. everyone used to run for the furthest room when she came into sight. but, not to worry, she could scream loud enough to be heard miles away.
and she knew she was a b*tch from h*ll. had been fired from her previous job and this job was to be her 'starting over' position. new hospital, same person. ugh!
don't have any advice to give you. nothing worked for us, but sure hope you have better luck.

actually, the initials are something else (not even going to say them).
unfortunately, god cannot answer all of our prayers, but he answered ours, and she is leaving!!!
good point about talking to her. she probably gets away with it because no one has said anything to her. the videotape is a good idea, too. but show it to her before you show it to admin. maybe she needs to see how ridiculous she looks.
Many years ago I worked at a job where this nurse would constantly yell at everyone! RN, LPN, CNA it didn't matter who you were. Us nurses were wondering what we should do about it. Anyway, the CNA's took care of the problem. When she arrived to the job one day about 20 CNA's surrounded her car in the parking lot and they were all yelling at her. We never saw her again.

Heh heh! I love those great CNAs! Too bad that wasn't done IN the facility, though.
I've been told that a good way to stop an aggressive employee (or anyone) in the hospital is to call a code...armstrong or other which means all employees come out and surround the offending aggressor. People tend to stop their tantrums immediately with a large group of people staring at them in disbelief....works better than everyone running away and hiding from said offender.

i just don't understand how she's gotten away with this unprofessional behavior for so many years w/o mgmt. getting involved.surely it much stink for morale and can't believe that mgmt. hasn't heard the complaints already....

Sadly, I think the management often "turns the other cheek." Isn't that awful? Sometimes, maybe it is just better to go elsewhere and find an environment that is less negative. It's not worth it.
Sometimes co-workers just won't speak up0, which I tihk is the worst thing!
What I think is really sad is that this is a widespread problem in nursing. I wish I knew why. If we knew why then we could begin to solve the problem. I have been in entire environments like that where 90% have bully mentality. These places usually can't keep newcomers as they are not accepted and are run off.
