Nurse Bully?

How do you deal with a nurse who is slamming things, condescending, humiliating, lying, harrasing other nurses, yelling at coworkers, cussing, complaining, changing her pt assignment before her coworkers come in for the shift and generally disrespectful?

This seems to be the way she has chosen to put fear in other nurses over the years, so that she feels as if she is in power.

Nothing seems to have been done over the years, just talking to her.

Bring a video camera to work, videotape it and show it to human resources as evidence of a hostile work environment.

Go to your superviser. Maybe a whole bunch of you can go to emphasize the general consensus.

Usually a few of us other nurses take their name tag out back and burn it! They usually get fired not long afterwards... LOL

Okay really has anyone tried talking to this person about their attitude?

You always have to be above reproach when dealing with someone like this.

I have worked with Nurses like this in the past and they've always pushed just as far as I would let them push...

Yea I complained to admin but it didn't seem to go anywhere?

I think the best way to deal with these people is to first try to talk to them about what is going on. You never know if they have some problem at home they are unknowingly bringing to work with them. You have to take the first step and it might be more helpful "if" there is another nurse who will talk to the offending nurse with you! You just have to have the right attitude when you do it and that is the attitude of concern and helpfulness otherwise they will get defensive and you'll have even bigger problems with that person!

Anyway that's how I would handle it... or you can always bring matches and burn her name tag on the patio! LOL

Just make sure you stand up for yourself ! Sounds like since she has gotten away with it this long, its not going to change anytime soon. You could go to human resources and file a complaint against her. This will probably not go over to well, but you can also mention your contacting labor relations board.

Write her up! and have your coworkers write her up as well. Post the harassment policy --that defines behaviors that are unacceptable, not only as a reminder to the bully but also for you and your co-workers,so you know what your rights are.

You wrote exactly what I was about to write. Glad I read the post comments first. :)

Fighting fire with fire never puts out the fire, it only makes the fire stronger and worse.

Remember....opposites attract for healthy reasons........put out those hot fires with cool water. Heat builds the temperature in a room, and cool air calms down the sweltering heat.

Rather than beat up an already beaten up individual, recall your days of psyche when "therapeutic communication" was used as an excellent tool to understanding those we often misunderstand simply because their actions reflect "anger, hostility, misery, and the like".

THAT type of communication was learned in my "Nursing 121" class where I went to school. Try it! It really DOES work! :nurse:

I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am that that happened to you. I really do empathize with you because I was just asked to "voluntarily resign" today from the hellhole I've been working at since August (my first job as an RN - just passed NCLEX in August). And you know what? It seems like a lot of my problems started (aside from some of the nasty attitudes) there when I hurt my back. I actually tried to hide the fact that I was hurt and work anyway, but got "busted" when my knees buckled while straightening up my back at the nurses station. For one reason or another (I also had to deal with a lying charge nurse), they have been trying to railroad me ever since. After today, however, I am actually relieved. I had started getting major GI problems and just hated going to the hellhole. I just can't understand how some of the slackers/naysayers get to stay. I never realized as a new nurse just how political hospitals can be. It's ok. We will both find better facilities where we can be appreciated and supported.:) Good luck to you and God bless!

I had a similiar experience. It is cgeaper to fire someone or force them to quit than to pay for an on the job injury.
