Preceptor here: I work in a big system......I don't look people up/check their license so I am not sure how that would impact my willingness  to precept you.  I don't think there would be an issue with getting a  contract at the corporate level but that would likely be the hang up if there was going to be one.     As THC is being decriminalized .....it feels like this should be taken offf our license.  just my 2 cents

I would probably look into asking your own PCP, NP/PA or anyone that you've come in contact with at you own health appointments. At least someone who 'knows you' might take pity LOL and give you a chance. I actually got my WMNP this was because I was pregnant and I just asked while she was right in front of me.

Good luck

I hate when people do this................

You have your RN license and are practicing as a nurse, and I think the same challenges you have gone through will continue.  That said, consider how you have navigated to get to where you are now...you can make this work for you.  I think precepting would be the least of my concerns related to this...finding a preceptor is a huge problem for all students.  It is more state BONs and then credentialing when you do get a job that would leave you with stress.  Again, it is more the competitiveness with NP role now that schools are flooding the market, as any "negative" mark and it is so easy to move along to the next applicant.  All your investment and obvious care, I wholeheartedly promote you continue on...you may have to move and take positions (at least initially) you would not otherwise choose, but you sound very strong and driven.  For example, if one state does not grant you licensing (unlikely) then another will.  This is possible, it is just harder for you.  I wish you all the best.

This is doable but not going to be easy.

For finding preceptors - I would imagine that it is going to very practice driven.. I wouldn't expect you to find many objections at all at small private practices... at clinics that are owned and run by larger facilities - such as the one I'm employed - they often require to see a full background check prior to allowing students and if they wouldn't pass a pre hire background screen then we are not allowed to precept them in the clinic. Gotta love corporate uh?

Also when applying for your state license - if you were in my state - you would have to personally appear before the board but don't think you would have too much trouble getting your license for a probationary period... and I have no doubt they would tack on several years worth of stipulations because of the old charge that would include drug monitoring as well as denying the ability to write any controlled substances.

Personally I feel this is unfair as you are being punished twice for the same crime - but they don't ask my opinion. ?

What state do you live in? They make you go through monitoring a second time for your CNP? That’s ridiculous. If you were cleared to practice as a competent RN, you should be clear to practice as a competent provider.

You would think this is the case, and I hope it would be. However, those of us who made mistakes and went through monitoring know that it is designed to make you fail. The BON is not there to help the fallen nurse, they are there to protect the public. If doing that means those of us who made mistakes are eliminated from the field I think they are happy to see that outcome.

I earned my punishment but I did not earn a lifetime of shame, self hatred, and the fear to move onward and upward. Yet.. here I sit sick to my stomach to sign up for classes because I just don't have anymore fight in me. Begging for preceptors, , pleading to take the certification as everyone else is able to, and then trying to find a job. A job not only as a new grad but one with a history that is public and will forever follow me.

How can I get in contact with you? Im not able to send you a private message. Im in NP school but haven't started clinicals yet, looking to talk to someone that has gone through this with disciplinary action on their license and any suggestions you may have.

Well, I got into school okay. We didn’t need personal insurance. My discipline is completed and I don’t have any restrictions; it’s still online for anyone to see though. No one ever asked about it for Clinical’s. I had no trouble finding preceptors, but that’s because I looked for them a year in advance. Everyone is having difficulty finding preceptors - prior discipline or not. I recommend reaching out to NPs 1-2 years ahead the semester you’re looking for. I was able to apply to take my examination without issues.

I’m not sure what will happen with licensing yet. TBD LOL.
