Not my day

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have the highest average grade in my class, 97.2, and my teacher had the audacity to call me out because I have had a few tardies. These rules were not made for people like me, they were made for people who show up late and don't know what they are doing. I occasionally show up late and know what I'm doing better than anyone else, I would go as far to say that I could teach my class if I had to. I know that I should be motivated to get up and be there on time, but I really hate morning classes and this is an early morning class, so it is hard for me because I am a night time person. I could work 3rd shift and it would not phase me in the least bit.

I am sorry if you feel that I do not have compassion, but it really is your fault that you got called out because you have not been showing up on time to class which is unprofessional. You may think you are being quite when you are opening the door, but you would be surprised about how distracting it is to have people coming in late.

This is what you wrote in your original statement which does imply that you are better than other students because of your GPA and that you should be excused from following the rules and should be allowed to show up tardy because you are doing well in the class.

I'd hate to have some of you calculating my drug dosage.

Also please do not imply that I do not know how to do drug calculations. I was a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician for 4 years and I know how to calculate dosages for medications.

WOW! :smackingf

You are right. It is my fault. However, I have never found a student coming in late to be distracting.

Ok, allow me to break this down further for you. I do not think that I am a 'better' student than anyone else. What I meant is that MOST people who show up late are not doing well in that class. Does this mean they are a bad student? Well, at that point in time they are, but that doesn't mean that they don't have the potential to do better if they focus their energy on education.

Lastly, my post never mentioned your name. It did, however, say "some of you," implying that I was not referencing to all of you.

While I think we all know that it's the right thing to show up for class on time, but I have to give it to the OP, trying to take an early AM class and work night shift. When I was in school and working nights, I was lucky if I stayed awake for that 0800 class. OP, as long as you are passing the class, I wouldn't make waves.

Thank you Christine!

Oh boy, you were just asking for it, huh? Haha!

I don't think I was asking for it :), but even though the way some of the people replied to me was kind of rude, I know that they are just trying to give me good advice. It could have been worded kinder, but I guess not everyone understands constructive criticism, or maybe they are mad about something themselves and don't care to be nice :).

someone else already said it, but showing up late disrupts the rest of the class. I'm always super prompt, and it drove me absolutly nuts when people would show up 5, 10, 30 minutes late and distrupt the lecture.

Also, FYI- I had over 102% in both A&P 1 and A&P 2) Tippeny.. will you be my personal tutor?? LOL

I'm not a morning person myself so I feel your pain. I graduate in May and I might be the only person in my class that thinks new grads often getting stuck with 7p -7a is a plus. LOL. However, I know I have to get myself up and get to class and clinicals on time. Trust me on this. Due to no fault of my own, I was carpooling with another student, but she was late, therefore we both ended up being late to clinicals, we were written up. Which resulted in an incomplete grade at the midterm evaluation. In the end we both passed. We were never late after that and our performance in clinicals were exemplary but 1 more time being late could have resulted in failing clinicals, thus failing the entire course. All because of being a few mins late.

Don't let tardiness derail what you are trying to do. So just set your alarm, I set 2 LOL, I know I'm not gonna get up for the first one. When you need to be on the floor @ 6:00 am, that's what it means. So I suggest trying to break this habit now before nursing school. Nursing school can be very unforgiving when it comes to not abiding by rules so try to break this habit ASAP.

"I have no sympathy for the OP. It is extremely rude and disrespectful to repeatedly come to class late. It has nothing to do with the fact that you know what you are doing and that other individuals do not know what they are doing. It has everything to do with the fact that showing up tardy is disruptive to your teacher and your fellow classmates."

Yes, quietly opening the door and going straight to my seat is extremely disruptive. I'd hate to have some of you calculating my drug dosage.

And for the record, I never said the others weren't on my level or anything like that. Also, I don't think the tardy rule should apply only to me; I think it should apply to everyone who is doing well.

And no, I do not expect sympathy from anyone on here. I just came here to rant my opinions. God knows getting sympathy from a nurse (most anyway) is not likely unless you are dying.

In my program. The door is locked after a certain time so if you show up late for lecture, you have to wait till a break to enter the classroom. So you end up missing a good portion of the lecture. Same goes for exams. If you are late, you will not be allowed to sit for the exam. So while you may think going quietly to your seat should be OK. Faculty may see it differently. Again, please break this habit ASAP.

Maybe its just me, but just because you have a good grade does not give you the right to be arrogant. What is five extra min. of your time to get to class on time?

You aren't being called out for your knowledge.

You are being called out for a pattern of being tardy. It would be a shame to go in front of your schools academic committee for being late to class. Check your syllabus and your student handbook, 99% of the time you will find something to the effect of "being tardy _ times will result in _______ consequence".

The syllabus is an academic contract between you and the instructor, the student handbook lays out overarching policies that supersede individual academic contracts. Failing to adhere to either means you may be held accountable for your actions.

Frankly, I would be happy if it was just a public "shame on you" instead of being brought before an academic review committee or having my grades adjusted depending upon what the rules are.
