Nosebleed, WWYD?

Published

I had a student (14 years old) just leave my office. He got on the bus with a nosebleed and was waiting in my office when I arrived with administration saying he was feeling lightheaded. VS all stable (130/78, HR 85, resp 12, O2 98%) but says he feels dizzy and tired. I had him lie down for 20 minutes and he drank 1/2 the water I gave him.

I strongly feel that he is exaggerating his symptoms. I called home (with him in earshot) to let parents know and cover my bases. So he heard me let them know that all VS are good to go, ect, ect.

How would you handle this situation? And if he returned in an hour?

How bad was the nosebleed? Did he eat breakfast? He may have been reacting to the actual thought of the nosebleed.

I just had a teacher leave that almost passed out because she cut her pinky finger and I said a "chunk" was taken out. Most kids can handle nosebleeds, but maybe...

Meh. You know you have to treat him as if. I would assess, send him back to class, and give the mom a heads' up if he comes back. Then it's out of your hands.

Some people are really squeamish around blood. When I was teaching students to draw blood, one got so lightheaded she had to lay down on the bench.

Giving water (and maybe a high-carb snack) and sending him back to class is what I would do but you also did the right thing in calling mom.

Teenage boys CAN be squeamish as well. Sometimes, they are worse than girls.

SOMETIMES?

I just had a kid in my office for 20 minutes who could not swallow a pill his mom brought up. The drama!

I was trying to be fair. :sneaky:

I would have done exactly what you did. If he came back, I would call his parents again...

I considered this, but he was quite dramatic about his nodding off and then jerking back to alertness. Over and over and over. He also comes in with obscure complaints on a semi regular basis.

In any case, he has not returned. Score.

FAKE FAINTING is the WORST!

If you happen to have a Tazer, don't be tempted to light that thing off while saying that you might have to cauterize the bleeder... Such a kid like that might think being Tazed in the nose would be a great way to get some time off from school.

Good thing I leave my Tazer in my car!
