Northern Calif Roll Call

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello - I'm in the true northern part of California, 70 or so miles northeast of Redding California in the mountains. I can see Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. I practice rural nursing and we RN's do a little bit of everything up here.

Hello Steph,

I am originally from that area of nor-cal and am thinking about returning but wondering about the job prospects up their. If your northeast of Redding are you talking like Burney, Chester? Just wondering. So what type of nursing are you doing up there? How do you like it?

Hi all, I am a new grad who just moved to Chico/Paradise, CA to work on a med/surg unit. It has been a big change from where I went to school on the coast, way up in northern california, but it hasn't been so bad. Med-surg is as hard as I imagined it would be, will be transfering after I get a years worth of experience. All the knowledge I have gained has been mostly worth the hard work.:p

Hey Sassy girl and steph, I'm originally from nor cal. lived in chico and redding for a few years. Great place, Sassy I've heard some bad things about Enloe can you relate? I've worked for gambro in chico as well enjoyed it there. Thinking about relocating to Redding or Chico but realestate has gone sky high in chico.

Fall River Mills actually - 17 miles from Burney. My husband is working in Chester hauling logs. :)

I do med/surg; OB; post-op; I'm a part-time ER nurse/supervisor (you do both here - house sup/ER nurse). I like the ER best. I really like part-time though - I work 2 days a week.

I went to college at Chico State when I was younger in the years of "Pioneer Days" - majored in Social Work.

Fall River Mills I've been there long time ago, I went to a highschool wrestling tournament there. I remember it being cold and snowy oh yea and small. I'm working in the er at kaiser permanente in central california, I like my job but dont care for where I live. I guess you cant take the country out of the boy. I did not know you could still make a living logging especially in Cali. When I lived in Redding in the 80's there were always mills closing. I had friends whos fathers lost their jobs. Hard times.....Has Fall River grown much.....I know Redding has grown alot.....I wish Kaiser would open a hospital there I'd move in a heartbeat....Happy New year......John :coollook:

Specializes in Labor & Delivery.

any info is greatly appreciated

Yeah, cold here in the winter. But nice in the summer and green and pretty. Love the views of Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. But has it grown? Well, no. Lots more people but building-wise, no. We are in the works for building a new hospital though - that ridiculous earthquake standard law.

Burney has grown some - they have a Subway and McDonalds :chuckle

Redding is growing by leaps and bounds - some say in a bad way since it is mostly with those "big box" stores and such. But we do have a famous bridge over the Sacramento River . . .the Sundial Bridge.

My husband had a logging business in the 80's. Yep, logging started a downhill slide then. But logging is still a large part of the jobs up here.

My kids wrestled when they were young - I can still smell it. :)

Which are the best hospitals to work in near the Monterey/Carmel area?

If you are specifically tied to the town of Monterey/Carmel, then CHOMP is your best and only option. If you have some flexibility you can travel a bit East to Salinas to Salinas Valley Memorial or Natividad Medical Center. I'd avoid Natividad if at all possible. There is also the option of Mee Mem. in King City, and smaller hospitals which I know nothing about in Gilroy, Hollister, etc. But depending on what you value as a nurse, I'd most certainly recommend CHOMP.

You know how nurses gossip?

I heard that a wonderful cardiac surgeon, Pablo Zubiate, and his wife retired in Chico. His son, also Pablo, is a perfusionist is at Enloe. His former partner, Li Poa, a smart skilled cardiac surgeon is there too. Anyone work there?

If so tell him "Hi" from a Los Angeles RN who learned and loved caring for his patients.

PS: I'm a BSN and like giving baths and backrubs. Don't mind drawing blood.

Well I'm the newest kid on the block. I'm live in Gridley but attend Yuba Community College out in Marysville, I can't say I'm loving it, but I don't think I'm really supose to. HaHa. So far I'm in my second semester (2 yr program) and crossing my fingers. It seems like most if not all of ya are working RN's or LVN's, did you guys/gals ever doubt yourself? I know this is what i want to do, but i dont know if its me or the program/instructors (if its thier scare tactic sometimes im scared it might be working). Did any of you go thru this and how do you suggest i get over it?

Im from the bay area. Hope to be finished with my RN program next spring. Two more semsters left wish me luck.

Yep- I just finished my second summer of clinicals at Enloe this year, in Cardiac step down- all three of those are there- although it is hard to tell when son and father have same name, but I did have patients with Zubiate and Poa.
