Hello - I'm in the true northern part of California, 70 or so miles northeast of Redding California in the mountains. I can see Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. I practice rural nursing and we RN's do a little bit of everything up here.

Hi all, I am a new grad who just moved to Chico/Paradise, CA to work on a med/surg unit. It has been a big change from where I went to school on the coast, way up in northern california, but it hasn't been so bad. Med-surg is as hard as I imagined it would be, will be transfering after I get a years worth of experience. All the knowledge I have gained has been mostly worth the hard work.
Hi Sassygrl - I'm not far from you - 70 miles northeast of Redding in the mountains. My Aunt and Uncle live in Chico and I went to college there a long time ago. Loved living there and wandering Bidwell Park. Rode my bike mostly as it is harder to drive a car around town and on campus than a bike. I heard from someone that they've banned bikes on campus now. Amazing ...

I personally don't know about Good Sam but we have some employees that started working per diem at the hospital I work at and eventually either quit Good Sam or went per diem there. This wasn't a mother baby unit though. But check out El Camino. They are still a non profit hospital that is overseen by a community elected board. They are not part of any group like Good Sam is part of Columbia. They have a reputation for good retention too.
I always hear such great things about El Camino. I went there the other day just to check it out and it is a beautiful campus. I think I want to get some mom/baby care exp. where I can get it (I don't have any yet) working per diem, then figure out where I really want to go. El Camino wants experience first. Still waiting to hear from Good Sam...
I am presently in SJ, at San Jose Medical Center, working ER nights. This is a travel assignment, and will probably not extend. I was looking for something on the far north coast when this came up.
If nothing comes up here when this assignment is up, I will go home to the Inland northwest (E. WA, ID, MT) to work for a while.
Been here about 3 weeks, so far loving it, a very good place to get your trauma skills up to date. We average several traumas a shift here.

I used to live in San Jose; still do travel assignments in San Francisco. El Camino was a great place to work as an aide while I was in nursing school; graduated in 1981. So was Good Sam. Their patient populations tended toward rich, high-tech people. They treated their nurses really well, from what I heard.
I remember in nursing schooll when we did Psych--my clinical group had to do ours at San Jose Medical Center; our patients were a lot of schizophrenic homeless people who were literally on the street having been put there by governmental closures of their "halfway" houses, where they would normally be supervised taking their medication. Once on the street, they chose to stop taking their meds--a lot were psychotic; a fair number were also faking it for the accomodations and regular meals--"3 hots and a cot," as some of them used to say.
Anyway, we envied the clinical groups that got to do to their psych rotations at Good Sam and El Camino--mostly neurotic rich housewives and other bored rich people who had "issues." These days, none of them would be in an inpatient psych setting.
Oh, my alma mater is Evergreen Valley College, San Jose--anybody else from there?

Whoa, Lisa, no kidding!!!! Is Miss Westbrook still there? She was my second year med surg clinical instructor, but I know she went on to become the director after the previous director, Joan Ballard died of cancer. Miss Westbrook was a really sweet lady--so was Mrs. Ballard.
