Northern Calif Roll Call

Published

Hello - I'm in the true northern part of California, 70 or so miles northeast of Redding California in the mountains. I can see Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. I practice rural nursing and we RN's do a little bit of everything up here.

This forum is a welcome addition! I am a first semester Junior in a BSN program in Oakland, CA. We start putting hands on patients this semester and tomorrow I will start my Mental Health Clinical at a hospital in Berkeley. My stomach is very unsettled because I am anxious. It is one thing to "ace" the book work...it is another to apply your knowledge. I want to walk into the unit competent but competence requires experience. Real people are a lot different than the "dummies" in lab. :)

How did you get through your first day on the floor??????

California is a great place to be a nurse!!!

Hi Ya'll Im in Northern Cali up in Mendocino County!!! Im an LVN and looking forward to talking the LVN to RN bridge offered at a college up here! Glad to see there is a site to let off a bit of steam!!!

Hi,

The Sutter/Sac City Community College that CMYST talked about admitted its first class in August. They'll be done in 67 weeks, and are admitting 50 a semester to the program. Sutter developed a new campus for the program, sort of close to their administrative building, and it's very, very cool.

To read more about it, check out this month's Real Life Healthcare, a magazine for nurses and allied health care providers in Northern California, at http://www.reallifehealthcare.com

Candy G, That was a cool article. Are you in the new Sutter Program (the first class). I am filling out my application for the next class. If you are in it I do have a few questions? Like is it everyday Mon - Fri, like 8-5pm or just certain days like normal college. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Hi NurseMelanie,

Actually, I wrote the article -- I'm the editor of Real Life Healthcare. Any of the people in the first class would be happy to talk to you, though, to tell you more about it. As far as I know, classroom time is in the mornings and clinical time (which starts almost right away) is in the afternoon. You can contact Louise Winkelblack at Los Rios at 916-563-3228 or by email at [email protected] for more information. It's a super program and a wonderful opportunity -- they pay for everything except books and uniforms!

Good luck!

Thankyou so much Candy G. Cmyst had given me a date and time before for an info seminar on it. I went but got there at the end. I did grab an application but would like to hear more info or opinions from anyone else. There is another seminar I am planning on going to. Feel free to give my email to anyone you know who might have info or opinions [email protected] . I will definately give Louise Winkelback a call. Thankyou

WOW Candy! Thanx for that link!

Any info on how to apply?

I have pretty much given up on ever being a RN for multiple reasons- But this is the type of innovation that can maybe get me back on track. Been a LVN for 20 years-Just about ready to retire and/or change careers.

Hey, sanakruz, don't give up! If you're anywhere close to Sacto, Sutter has information sessions set through October. The next one is on Oct. 17 in Auburn, followed by several on Oct. 20 at the Cancer Center on 28th and L in Sacto, then on the 21st in Davis, the 23rd at Sutter Memorial at 51st and F in Sacto, then in Roseville on the 24th. Call 568-3100 for more information, or check out the Sac City College page for more information about the LVN to RN program. And good luck!

Thanx Candy!

Ive spent about 7k on Regents and havent been able to finish /stay motivated. My 2 oldest are now in college themselves and it looks like it's not going to happen unless major kismet comes my way

I currently live and work in Stockton. I am envious of you who are are at Sutter Memorial. I was there for 15 yrs. and had a terrific expeirence in the PICU. The valley here is blind to the needs of peds and it is very frustrating but that is another thread!!!! Miss the KINGS.

Hi, picu75rn: I'll pass your comments on to my friends at Sutter!

and sanakruz, sometimes kismet needs a little boost -- contact the Sutter or Los Rios folks. You'd be amazed at what they can make happen...

picu75rn - What do you think of the Stockton Hospitals? I live in Manteca.
