Northeastern Direct Entry 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Thread for the incoming 2019 Northeastern Direct Entry applicants so we can help each other out through the application process.

I had interview last Tuesday the 12th for the FNP program. I was told I’d receive an email by Wednesday of this week regarding decisions. Of course, I didn’t receive an email. I’m getting a little bit worried about the lack of this clarity with this program.

Me too. Was expecting to have heard by now even if it was a rejection. The fact that each specialty does things different makes sense in theory, but I wish the timeline was standardized and communicated clearly.

I interviewed for the FNP track on Wednesday the 13th and received my acceptance around 10 AM on Friday the 22nd. Still waiting to hear back from MGH IHP and Northeastern's financial aid to make a decision! Best of luck!

Has anyone else heard back who interviewed for FNP?

LOL SAME. (Except northeastern knew right away I wasn’t one of their top choices since I got a waitlist decision 2 weeks after my interview ??‍♀️)

I’m leaning toward BC over MGH primarily due to cost (I got a scholarship at BC and not MGH), location (I’d prefer not to have to drive into the city everyday since I don’t plan on moving), and length (2 yrs versus 3 - to me the 3rd year at BC if I decide to do the DNP transition is more beneficial than 3 years for the BSN and MSN at MGH).

I got into BC, MGH, Northeastern in addition to a few other programs. Based on what I've gathered from info sessions and in speaking with alumni as well as NPs and nurses who I work with at MGH, here is what I know. The nurse managers who hire for their divisions say they will not hire a new NP without any bedside nursing experience. While BC is greatly known for its nursing programs in general, I feel the 2 years will be too short for me to gain any substantial bedside nursing experience given that there isn't much room built into the program for that or does it seem to be endorsed by the program for students to work. Some hiring NPs I spoke to agree. That being said, it is transitioning to a DNP program so maybe there may be more room there? Again, not the vibe I got from the info sessions I went to. BC did offer me a scholarship though. As for MGH IHP, I interviewed two NPs I work with and when I asked if they felt prepared to practice independently after graduating, both said no. They both went on to do a fellowship after graduating from MGH IHP because they didn't feel prepared to practice. They are both very successful NPs now, but they felt needed that extra prep after graduation. Some other NPs and healthcare leaders at MGH said that the program is a little disorganized, and also said MGH doesn't really tend to hire MGH IHP graduates (seemed like a bit of red flag to me here since). Of course, each division is different and some MGH IHPs do work at MGH. The upside is MGH does offer the BSN and MSN, though not until after you're done with the entire program, which I'm not sure how much of a help that is since the BSN is most helpful after the first year when you're looking to work as a nurse. I'll be giving up my Northeastern spot since during my interview, I asked how long the program takes to complete for acute care, and they said 5-5.5 years. It's great that they build in 2 years for students to work as nurses full-time, but it just seems like a really long time to dedicate to a program to come out with an MSN, when other programs do it in ~3 years. I've opted to go to UMass Med's direct-entry program that culminates in a DNP in 4 years, since the field is moving in that direction and I already have a master's degree in another area. I think all the programs have their pro's and con's as with anything, so it's a matter of personal fit for sure. Just sharing what I've heard in my travels and how I've come to make my decision. Good luck to all!

Any FNP applicants also waiting to hear back about an interview? I'm assuming it isn't a great sign, but I'm not sure what to think. I went to NU for undergrad so I'm a little surprised I'm getting radio silence

I interviewed in mid-January for adult gerontology too, and haven't heard anything since...

I haven’t heard anything about the interview. Frankly I don’t love their communication. It’s odd to me that some people get interviews and offers or waitlisted while others haven’t heard a thing? I applied to 7 programs, got into 5, waitlisted at 1 and no communication from NEU... if I get in I’ll decline.

Congrats on your 5 acceptances! That’s amazing!

I agree. It’s a mess. I’ll make sure to post if I hear anything ☺️
