Congrats to all of us that were accepted to the nursing program at either campus for Fall '06!!!!

:balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons:

I'm going to be at the NLC campus! See you in June for orientation!

Also, congrats for making it to the next semester to all new 2nd - 4th semester NLC/ECC student nurses & congrats to the graduates! :balloons:

Good luck to everyone!

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for that one! :balloons:

A book that really helped me through my first semester was Fundamentals Success by Patricia Nugent and Barbara Vitale. ISBN 0-8036-1056-4. It gives fairly relevant questions with good rationales.

Maybe I am missing something here..I thought the "uniforms" WERE scrubs. Fun, those uniform styles you mentioned...do you know if that's what the school REQUIRES or could they be bought from where ever as long as they were the correct color and had the logo embroidered?

As far as I know, you have to be in uniform at the hospitals, and as they said above maybe for check-offs, etc.

The top & lab coat have an embroidered El Centro Logo. I hope like everything that we can use different pants, though.

I don't like the pants style number. I'd rather have flares. If not flares, then at least a straight-leg, not a tapered leg. (#8327 is at least a straight leg pant.) :D

Katie posted these on the Spring thread a while back, they are the links to the uniform styles from Landau:

I'd rather wear scrubs. Does anyone wear regular scrubs to lecture and skills lab?

amyindallas- you have to buy them from the school because they have a special embroidered logo on each piece. The black pants though you can buy anywhere if you can find them cheaper because they don't have the logo on them. I wish I would have done that.

The uniform is black pants, ceil blue top, and a white lab coat.

Thank you so much for clarification. The pants are what I was worried about anyways. I have a real problem finding pants that fit well because of my figure. Glad to know that won't be such a problem now .

I wish the logo could be bought on a insignia patch. I believe that's the way they used to do it.

Seems it would be much cheaper that way.

As far as someone else embroidering the logo, it may be a copyright thing. I'm not sure. I'll see if I can find out something. If I do, I'll post it on here.

OMG....I picked up a Memory Notebook of Nursing today at Half Price Books. ($7.98 on Volume II)

I love it! It has "visual images & mnemonics to increase memory and learning". Things such as:

"Reasons For Unconsciousness" Think "Red, White & Blue"

Red (Stroke or BP)

White (Shock or Hemorrhage)

Blue (Respiratory or Cardiac Arrest)

The one I bought was an older version, but the ISBN is 0-9628210-8-X, and is by Zerwekh, Claborn, & Miller from Nursing Education Consultants.

Under Jo Carol Claborn's name it has El Centro. So, maybe she did/does work there?

Has this book been mentioned to anyone? I am definitely interested in a newer copy!

Oh yeah- I forgot about that book. There are two or three volumes of those books and they are EXCELLENT! One of the teachers that wrote it up did work at El Centro about 20 years ago...that is what our lecture teacher told us.

Yes, Mr. M. told us that those memory picture books are written by retired El Centro nursing instructors. I want to buy them, too.

I go to Half Price Stores, too. But last time they had only a highlighted version and I didn't want to buy that.

I'm glad the pants don't have to be purchased from the school. I am NOT a fan of tapered leg. Ha!

Maybe some people weren't doing a good job of sewing on the patch, so they decided to do away with it?

I really need to make a trip to Half Price books soon! Fun keeps finding all these great books and I am jealous, lol ;)

I know just how you feel - I'm getting jealous too! I am actually about to leave right now to go to Half Price Books! I visited the site to see locations and I signed up for offers and instantly got a coupon in my e-mail for $5.00 of $25.00 purchase so I am for sure taking that with me in case I find something good I can use for school.

:chuckle Happy shopping!! :D

That's really neat to know about the former El Centro instructors. There are 3 edition. This is 1997, but I believe there are 2003 & 2005 editions as well. I want them alllll!

Tapered legs are not my style either. :chuckle

Does anyone actually wear a fanny pack? I've seen nurses wear those. I'm not a huge fan, but I can see where a small one would come in handy for personal belongings, such as keys, breath mints, lipstick, Vicks... :D

Yes, I have seen fanny packs. I have always just left my bag in the break room (no lockers for students) and nothing has disappeared. Oh, and I have never had to use Vicks (even when I was emptying colostomy bags). :D

katie, you said that people liked your lecture instructor for clinical, correct?

does anyone know about the instructors with the last name initials of h-b, t, f, or j. :chuckle

also, lalajenn, or any of you, what did you think about the va hospital?

what about charlton methodist or mc of plano?

if you prefer, please e-mail your thoughts on your clinical instructor, and your clinical site. i'm trying to figure out which one i prefer.

va is closer and only 1 day/week, but on the down side, it is 12 hr days right before a lecture day. are exams in class time, or your own time?

thanks for your help!!
