I'm going to be at the NLC campus! See you in June for orientation!

Also, congrats for making it to the next semester to all new 2nd - 4th semester NLC/ECC student nurses & congrats to the graduates! :balloons:

Good luck to everyone!

Whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! :D

Well, first pre-clinical lab is over, and the ECC orientation is over.

mysterious_one....sorry we didn't get to meet you. I'm the one that told the lady she shouldn't have the the girl put her personal info on the big screen for everyone to see. :uhoh3:

Oh well....now I have to go help my 15 yo daughter with her Algebra II, then eat dinner, then get to reading my orifice off...........................

I wasn't feeling overwhelmed until my daughter told me she needed help. Now I'm thinking...how does one balance family and nursing school?????

She just got transferred into this class because the school had her scheduled for 3 core classes next semester, and none this semester. (They have 18-week classes...set up like college classes.)

Anyway......hope everyone has a good week whatever classes you're taking! ;)

Now that many of you have finished your first day of class....deep breath in....deep breath out....repeat as needed.

I know that there will be many times that you will feel totally overwhelmed with all the things that are required of you, both school and family related. Take it all one step at a time. I found the first 4-6 weeks to be the worst for me....and looking back, I'm not sure if the load really lightened up or if I just got used to it.

Please keep us updated on how things are going. And if you have specific questions re: NLC or EC, feel free to pm me...I'll surely answer if I can.

Thanks, Finallyat40!

I can see what you mean about it may get better after a while. It's only the first day, and I'm still trying to figure out how to balance reading, the newly revised schedule given to us today, etc.

Glad to hear you survived the first day :) I'm sure you will find the balance!

So, I was at ECC today, too, but I couldn't stay longer because we had a surprise orientation at Med City in the afternoon.

Surprise #2: we will have only 2 days peds clinical. We will use a simulator baby most of the time.

Surprise #3: one of the clinical instructor mentioned that from now on if you have two lecture grades under 70 your are out. Is it true?

The good news is that I met Allison and Brianna. Hey girls.

For my clinical group...

What went from a Tuesday, 12-hour clinical is now (surprise!) a two day, Thursday-Friday clinical from 7-4.

OK....I really need to find my way through all of this paperwork and get back to reading. :uhoh21:

Katie,

Did you take notes as you read, or just read & used notes taken in lecture?

Thanks. :)

I took notes during the lecture and then I read the book and added more notes to the original one, last semester.

This semester I try to read the chapters first and then take notes. I have to work out a new system.

I'm trying to pre-read as well. I'm just not sure on 'what is so important'.

I'm just hoping that if I study the notes, learn the key concepts & vocab, then I'll be able to use common sense to take the exams.

(I guess that's pretty much what critical thinking is anyway, huh?) lol

How was everyone's first day?

Use the syllabus. The test questions are based on the syllabus and it gives you an idea what to read in the textbooks. We had our first lectue today and my instructor told us not to read every word of each chapters. Go with the syllabus.

By the way I am scared a little bit right now. There are so many opportunities to fail this semester.

You have your first lecture tomorrow? Good luck :nurse:

Keep positive. I have faith in you! :kiss

Thanks for the heads up about the syllabus. I did buy it, so I guess I need to look at it. I bought it at ECC Saturday when I took the math test, and haven't really looked at it yet.

Yes, my first lecture is tomorrow. (Although we did get to meet Mrs. J in pre-clinical lab yesterday. She did a color personality thing on us. Mine was yellow and green were tied at 7, and red and blue were both at 5.

(I guess that means I can have fun in an orderly fashion.) :chuckle

I am also trying to pre-read and take notes. I am a little confused though.....maybe this is such a stupid question at this point.....but why do we have so many books if most of the syllabus is over Fundamentals......are they for reference? I have only gotten through chapters 1 and 2 in that book. I am a little freaked out about tomorrow...just because of the unknown! Mi'Shelle, what books are you taking or are you taking your laptop?

Kendra

BTW....I too received 100 on my math test. What was up with us having to memorize all the abbreviations and not using them?
