where in north carolina?

HI fellow nurses,

I need your help. I'm from new york and we are considering of moving either tampa or north carolina. Since i have no clue where to go, can you suggest a country or city that you think you will choose to live if you have a family, houses between 100-200K and near good hospitals? We're considering the wake county in raleigh or Bennington in DUrham. What do you guys think?

most people i know are leaving. it is just to hot and fast paced. i am moving to n.c, my daughter lives there with her husband, and his family and they are very happy there. i find it prettier, and friendlier there. tired of florida!

Well, it looks like I'll be the only poster to say "Don't go to Florida!" ... This is just a personal preference. I live in Florida now, and have lived here for the better part of my life (in the panhandle for the younger years, at FSU for college, in Jax and now in Tampa). I'll be moving to Charlotte next month for grad school and can't wait!

Maybe I'm just a bit too into the weather, but Florida has 2 seasons. Summer and summer. Did I mention that it's hot? Because it's always summer? I can't wait for 4 season's! I have several friend's that live in Charlotte and they absolutely love it. I'm sorry I can't give any specifics on the Durham area, but I thought I could at least give you my opinion on Tampa. And yes, downtown Tampa isn't very pedestrian friendly, but there are plenty of things to do around Tampa (Channelside, Ybor city, Hyde Park, Westshore, and drive across any number of bridges to St. Pete for more options).

Thinking of moving to nc. my sister lives in the raeford/ fayetteville area can anyone tell me any info about lpn salary in this area also about schools for kids, and rn programs in this are.

I left Charlotte a few years ago, lived there over thirty years. Now live in the Piedmont triad area. Wouldn't dream of living anywhere but NC. Welllllllllllllllll Va. Beach holds certain appeal :p

tampa is very expensive....summers are hot in florida, i havelived here most of my life and am leaving, and then it rains all summer long, and all the hurricane threats. i think north carolina is great. my daughter lives there, and my other daughter plans to move there too after she finishes nursing school.

I would recommend the mountains of NC, which are beautiful. My husband and I are both from here but lived in Fayetteville, NC for years while my husband was in the military. My children went to elementary school there, but when it came time for middle school we moved over seas, intentionally. I didn't want my oldest son going to a middle school where cops had to surround it one day, not my opinion of a healthy, safe environment. Not all are like that I'm sure.

We currently live in a small town with one of the top rated schools in North Carolina. The campus has preschool-12th, all in seperate buildings but all contained on one campus. Approximately 120 students +/- per grade.

We are about 1 1/2 hrs from Atlanta, Asheville, and Chattanooga, Tn., a little town called Hayesville. Some people commute to the bigger cities to work, but there are hospitals around here, just smaller and slower paced. Don't know what the pay scale is here, so can't tell you that.

As far as crime and gang stuff goes, we don't have much of that. Although we all are very aware of how fast things change. I don't know if you can ever find that "land of perfect" like the Walgreens commercial talks about, but good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for.

I would choose to move to Charlotte, or maybe the Suburbs of Charlotte. I am not a nurse yet, but I grew up here in the Charlotte area. Charlotte is a new and growing city. Although Charlotte is playing catch-up to many other cities, there is alot to look forward to here! The cost of living here is decent, I don't think it costs anymore than any other place. You can definitely find a NICE home between 100-200k. In the Lake Norman area where I live (Davidson), things tend to increase because of the Lake, and all the upscale crowd. I would look at some of the smaller towns surrounding...Mooresville, Corneilus, Huntersville, Mattews, Concord, Harrisburg, Pineville. But even in those places, you will find decent homes. There are many other places to move throughout the state. The entire state is beautiful. As someone mentioned about the Chapel Hill area, the schools system there is GREAT! Raleigh is very nice too. However I am just partial to the area in which I live. I went to school in Eastern NC, and although I loved the school, I didn't enjoy the rural area, of Greenville NC. However Pitt County hospital is HUGE, and there are probably a TON of jobs there. Things are slower paced in the Eastern part of the state, and there is not much do, until you reach the beaches and outerbanks.But for some, I am sure slow paced is great. Also it just seemed to be in the middle of no where. Civilization was an hour in every direction.

I believe there is something here for EVERYONE in Charlotte. Just all depends on what your interests and hobbies are. hi! i'm sue. i'm currently a nursing student at ULL (lafayette, louisiana) and i just want to say that i want to move up to NC sooo bad so i'm really excited to read all of this positive feedback about it. all of my cousins moved up to asheville about 5 years ago and love it. i'm a new single mom and i want to raise my daughter around my relatives (plus i really hate the climate here. louisiana is the armpit of the nation!) so i'm looking into moving up there once i finish my BSN here.

i'm looking at real estate and it seems so expensive compared to lafayette. i'm guessing its because when i type in 'asheville', i'm only getting results within the city? maybe i need to be looking in the suburbs? but what are some of the areas?

also, what can i expect my starting salary to be in asheville?

and if y'all have any other input to offer, i'd appreciate it. i cannot wait to get up there!!!!!

oh and i forgot: i'm going up there to visit oct13th-16th!!! anything that i must see while i'm there???

I'm in the Winston-Salem area. My parents up and left florida when I was 4 because of the crime. We moved to SC, lived there for 5 years and then moved to Kernersville. I LOVED Kernersville. It's a small town outside of Winston-Salem. The only prob with Kernersville is that it's gotten sooooo crowded. They're trying to put way too much in such a small little town. My heart is still in K-ville, but it's only 8 miles from where I live in Winston-Salem now, so not too bad.

High Point is also a nice area. If you want out where there isn't much, try Davidson county. That's where we plan on buying a home when the beltway takes ours out in 3-4 more years.

Dell just came here and has provided a lot of jobs and we also have a Fed Ex hub now in Greensboro.

If you're looking for schools, Winston-Salem State is a great one. It's not a huge school, not real expensive either, but the nurses that come out of that school are AWESOME. I honestly think they prepare their students better than any other school.

As for hospitals, we have North Carolina Baptist Medical Center and Forsyth Memorial Hospital. There is also a very small hospital that performs surgeries called Medical Park Hospital.

I personally love it here. We have the coast to the east and the mountains to the west. Neither is that far so we have the best of both worlds.

Asheville is BEAUTIFUL! WOW! You've got to check out the Biltmore Estate. Maybe homes are expensive because Asheville is kind of a "touristy" city because of the Biltmore Estate and in the fall, people head there because of the beautiful leaves and mountains.

Hi!

From NC here :) Been living here 8 years and I love it ! I would recommend moving further out than Raleigh, though. Clayton is a nice small town .Quickly growing and you can find a nice house for under 200k. We live in Cary, its a bit snooty, but TONS to do for kids. I have really never been to an area w/ this many kids. Every other car is a minivan, which is or isn't desireable based on your situation in life. However, its expensive to us. I think the median house price is about 210, which gets you about 2000 sq ft. Prices are higher in some snootier subdivisions. Almost all schools in Cary are good. Those on the West side of town are a bit better, but of course house prices are higher.I really wouldn't want to live anywhere else than this general area, even if we do end up across town. Durham has some nice parts, but very high crime and some bad schools too. Chapel Hill has some of the best schools, also very expensive. Also to consider, this area has the highest concentration of PHDs and 2nd highest Bach degrees in the country. Could be kids' high test scores are just result of smart mommies and daddies :) I would like to look at other areas around here, but in terms of nursing, there are tons of opportunties and compared to other areas, not too bad of commute times. 2 univ affiliated hospitals, Duke and UNC and 4 or so private hospitals. I have met several nurses and most seem pretty happy w/ where they work. Also, nurse education and further education is great.

I am from North Carolina and I have visited Florida. I lived in Raleigh and went to college there, Durham is not the area I move to, outside the beltline like the other person said is great look into Cary or Morrisville the cost of living is good on e of my brothers lives in morrisville and works in Raleigh. Also close to the interstate yopu can always visit Florida or New York anytime. My other brother lives in Greensboro which is also a nice metro\country living area. If you have children NC is it!! Just dont move to Virginia which is where I am now I hate it, I can't wait to get back to NC Good luck
