HI fellow nurses,
I need your help. I'm from new york and we are considering of moving either tampa or north carolina. Since i have no clue where to go, can you suggest a country or city that you think you will choose to live if you have a family, houses between 100-200K and near good hospitals? We're considering the wake county in raleigh or Bennington in DUrham. What do you guys think?
thank you very much. If you need any info about new york, i'll be willing ti help.
Hi
Carlolinapooh-got your PM but can't reply because your box is full!
Will call you when we are there -probably Friday 14th evening.
RN 2B- Could you tell me more re how you have found the schools.Which school do your children attend? We are looking at Durham area to relocate from UK. WE have visite NC TWICE LAST year and decided though Chapel Hill was nice we thought it might be a bit too self important for us as we love the southern ways. We are caught between Raleigh/Durham and Gaston/ Cabarrus County (Charlotte area) but lokks like more job opps for husband in R/D area as he works in Health (not medical)Research and Universities in Charlotte don't seem to have much to offer. Did notice that new nutrtion resarch centre is being built in Kannapolis and that dept from Duke is moving there.
Anyone else that can help with advice is welcome (but not if it's against Southern ways please). Interestingly I was born in Durham in Northern England .It is a famous university small city and many people visit its castle and cathedral each year. We could not believe how like Durham cathedral Duke Chapel is.

I know you directed your question to the other two posters but I can tell you that a similar looking house in my neighborhood that is 4 bed/2 ba, 2100 sq ft on 1/2 acre wooded lot with a deck just sold for around $235K.
Ooo, I can't tell you what we got ours for. you'd pass out and demand to see the mortgage paperwork for proof. The house was SECONDS from foreclosure.....I know the realtors were SOOOO relieved when we dropped off the comps listing for this neighborhood! And with the exception of some questionable wallpaper, it was in excellent condition - not your typical foreclosure beater.... (smile)
Thanks for the compliments from the other poster; I appreciate it. I am very proud of my house.
There are plenty of houses around here - many of which are indeed like mine - in the $200K bracket. From my understanding that's very reasonable.
I'm feeling VERY smug right now - can't help it! - word of advice - never avoid the ones in foreclosure; you just might find a gem as it appears we did. I'll say this - when we bought two years ago I looked at brand new, 1600 square foot townhouses over in Auburn in Durham that were going for $20K more than what we ended up paying for this place.
OK, all you RTP'ers - pick your chins up off the floor.
Miss Woosie - I see your post; sounds great! Sorry my PM box is full; things have been so nuts around here this week I've forgotten to check it lately. I'll be looking for your call. Looking forward to meeting you!
waynesville & carolinapooh: your house is beautiful. nc sounds great. how much would a house like yours go for today , 20 minutes outside the city. thanks
Thank you for the compliment. My guess right now is about $190K to $225K. But you can find them for lots less, just as nice. In my neighborhood (probably because it's considered a bit more "out"), 1700 sq ft is going for about $165-172K, depending on how they're decorated, how big the lot is, etc.
It really depends on where you want to live and how much you want to pay, as ridiculous as the answer sounds. Treyburn is right up the road from me and has houses in the low millions.
I have to agree with you 100%...we are new to NC and if we had listened to all the advice we got about avoiding Durham, we wouldn't have the awesome home and sense of community that we do. We live in SW Durham, about 15 minutes from Duke on one side and 15 minutes from UNC Chapel Hill on the other. We live in a 2400 sq ft house on a little over half an acre with deer, bunnies, crickets and frogs, and behind our home is a protected land area that will never be built on. Our neighborhood is safe, we know all our neighbors, and you'll find many families out walking after dinner. It's not uncommon to pass someone in their car and have them wave to you whether they know you or not. We are also not far from a major recreational lake area. Of course there are bad areas of Durham but what city doesn't have that? If you do your research properly you can figure out where to avoid. Yes, the schools do have their share of problems, but the problems I'm aware of don't even make me bat an eye because it is LOADS better than where we came from in CA. We looked at Cary and Apex and although it's a nice area, it's a little too "little suburbia" for us, not to mention the fact that the schools in Cary reassign the kids annually so you never quite know where they will end up from year to year. Who needs that?! Durham can definitely be a nice place to consider and you know what? I'm almost glad people avoid it so it won't get overgrown and lose its charm! We love it and are thankful every day we chose to be here.
LOL! Me too! Saves us on water restrictions! I was thinking about that today when I was watching the news.
Gotta go now....gotta go get my AK-47 out from the closet...after all, it's almost eleven pm.....(pops cartridge into weapon, locks and loads....)
I grew up in a third world country and Durham looked dirty to me!!! ( SORRY):uhoh21:
I came here in North Carolina ( Fayetteville) to visit my then boyfriend and I fell in love............with him and the place. The trees.........the weather.....the seasons. Now....... Fayetteville is pretty boring...........just an army town.........but there is the army hospital that is always advertising for nurses. I had my baby there and it is very nice ( but they still complain about it) But Americans are spoiled somewhat..........( SORRY):uhoh21:
The house prices I think here is very good. The cost of living is very reasonable, but then again I'm caribbean so what the hell do I know?
But I think Florida is more expensive to live in.
North carolinians are very friendly people. Always polite and helpful. I am impressed. I want to stay here but my husband (yes I hooked him) wants to go ..........anywhere else. Hes just tired of the army. My children love it here. But I gotta go where he goes. But I think he will regret it because we can get a good priced house in this state.
Umm I think Charlotte was nice...but I only drove through. Raleigh looked nice to. They say Cary is one of the safest towns in the US ( dont remember where I heard that)

I've lived in the Third World as well and cannot imagine how Durham would compare. New one for me.
Obviously you've never been lost in Camden, NJ. Or the south end of Philadelphia. Now THAT'S dirty. I don't know where you've been in Durham....consider yourself lucky you don't live in the Fayetteville I remember from about ten, fifteen years ago. It was horrible - Bragg Blvd. was all pawn shops and peep shows. Glad to hear it's improved!
Oh - the Caribbean. Yeah - you got me on that one. The beach is like snow - it makes EVERYTHING prettier! :)
hello all,
We also will be relocating to Charlotte soon. I just received my temporary license.
What are everyone's favorite hospitals in the Charlotte area and why?
What are the wages for RNs?
Are there a lot of continuing education classes in the Charlotte area or do I need to think about driving to Raleigh?
How are the units divided in the different hospitals? Are there dedicated units for orthopedic patients?
What do you like the most about working with your colleagues?
Are there many seasoned nurses available as resources?
I like to sew, what are the uniform codes?
That's all for now;) I look forward to hearing from each of you
Best wishes
gentle
By the way,
Carolinapooh, I couldn't agree more with what you wrote regarding the Raleigh Durham kindness. I have been kindly surprised by the mom who called our home to help me learn about the school systems in Raleigh. She didn't even know me :0. I almost wish we were moving there.
sincerely,
gentle

Congratulations on your upcoming move! I lived in Charlotte in the 1990's, and loved it! I worked in 2 facilities, Piedmont Medical Center across the border in Rock Hill, SC, and Mercy South (now known as CMC-Pineville). I didn't think much of Piedmont, and didn't stay long. I loved Mercy South. It was a small facility then, with lots of comraderie among the nursing staff and doctors. I would recommend checking into it. The area has grown so much in the years since I left that I'm not current on my information. New hospitals have opened, and old ones have changed hands, so hopefully someone with the current scoop will post. There used to be a dedicated orthopedic hospital in town. I don't know if that still exists.
The Charlotte Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) offers plenty of good continuing ed programs, so a road trip to Raleigh should not be necessary.
Best wishes on your move!

Durham looked dirty to you?! I wonder what area you went through, couldn't possibly have been on our end of town! That's okay though, to each his own!
Glad things worked out for you in NC and that you got your man. Good luck wherever you end up moving with your family!
