North Carolina Roll Call

Published

Ok folks - it is that time again .... there are many new names and faces (well avatars anyway) on our web site ... time to get to know the North Carolina people.

Lets give a location - why you are there, your current nursing status and anything else you might want to share ....

I am Patrick, the moderator for the North Carolina Forum ... live in Asheville - moved here a year ago from Florida and love the mountains and the moderate climate .... can tell you that Hurricane Frances breezed through town last week and gave us a lot of headaches! Anyway, I am a nurse manager for a med-surg unit and a single father of 3. I attend the University of Phoenix and am hoping to graduate with my BSN-MSN in the very near future. :coollook:

hi all! currently cna and phlebotomist enrolled to enter adn program!! wish me luck!!:monkeydance:

Hi, everyone! I'm new here, from Trinity, NC [between High Point and Asheboro]. Glad to discover this site and hear from others in the area; I'm taking NCLEX next Monday, June 12th in Richmond, VA. [Please send up prayers for me!!!]

Kathy, [henayneiCLNC], glad to hear from someone in our beautiful mountainous region on the state. I would LOVE to live in the Alleghany/Ashe County area myself one day; it is so peaceful there. Do you have folks from the area, or how did you end up in West Jefferson, from FL? Hope all's well there with you and your's there.

Kathy, aAs for your nurse consultant experience, how did you get into it, and how's it going? This is an area of nursing of special interest for me, as I have 12 years experience as a paralegal, and now am graduating from nursing school. I hope to venture into the legal-medical aspect of the profession, although I also have a special interest in oncology, and this is where I hope to start. Kathy, have you found work in NC yet? Will you be pursuing both the legal and practical aspects here in NC? Best wishes to you. Feel free to email me! ~~ best wishes to all ~~ jeanne nelson

I knew the nurse who owned this house, I will eventually buy it from here once I establish an income history in this area :) I spent 3 moinths of every summer of my youth in Brevard on a mountain in a cabin my folks built by hand and we lived without elect, tv or plumbing every year - it was wonderful! LOL - now this place has all those things and I'm still up on a mountain and love it!

come on over to Legal Nursing here on this forum - you'll find out so much info! You need at least 3 years of RN nursing before going for your certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant, you are marketing your expertise and insight as a nurse, not your legal knowledge ;) but come on over to Legal Nursing and chat with LNCs there!!

Thanks for the response! You are in a beautiful spot of the country. Mom had a gorgeous log cabin on a beautiful hill in Sparta during her last 5 yrs, and it was a very peaceful, serene spot; would have loved to have kept it, but it didn't work out. We hope to retire somewhere up there one day in the not-too-distant future, Lord willing and the creek don't rise! In the interim, please enjoy the serenity for us folks who are still living in the "rat race" of city-dwelling-life down off of them there peaceful hills! ['xcuse my accent; can you tell i'm from NC?!?]

Thanks for the referral to the Legal Nursing area of this site; GREAT info there! I believe, after I accomplish my 3-yr-stent of floor-nursing, I can successfully pass the CLNC certification exam with little effort. How did you go about getting your first case(s)? Do you work directly w/the attys, or for insurance companies/corporations, or whom? There are numerous options available . . . once experience and certification is obtained . . . a terrific opportunity for independence, it appears. And it is definitely independence I seek!

I'll be seeing you on the Legal Nursing postings, I'm sure! Thanks again for the tips and best wishes to you here in NC! [i have a friend working in radiology at Alleghany Hospital. If you need any contacts, I'd gladly refer you to her. Don't think the hospital is thriving there, but it's a necessary evil that is existing, and thus I assume, would be in need of nurses!]

Hi everyone! I am a new ADN graduate of Gaston College in Dallas, NC near Gastonia, NC however, I live in Claremont, NC. I passed the NCLEX-RN on May 31 (only 75 questions....yea:yeah: ) and I will begin working June 19 at a local hospital on the Telemetry/Surgical floor. I have a 16 yr old daughter, a 14 yr old step-son, a wonderful husband, 4 dogs, 5 cats and 4 horses. As you can see, we are animal lovers!

I am interested in pursuing my BSN at a "satellite" university and was hoping I could gain some information as to the best programs available. Does anyone have any recommendations?? Thanks in advance!!

Oh yeah, allnurses.com is a wonderful site with lots of useful info...I love it...Thanks!

Hello rrepass,

Congrats to you! I am from Charlotte,NC. I have been accepted to Gaston College's ADN for Fall '06. Can you give me any advice, info, or insight on what I have in store? Also, if you know the stats about the program such as pass rates, # of people per class, costs etc., etc. Thanks a bunch!

Hi! I'm a new grad of the NEWH Nursing Consortium and passed my NCLEX-RN on June 6th! I have three children who are 8, 5, and 3 years old and have a wonderful and supportive husband! I'm not sure of Gaston's program, but mine was hard (as anyone could guess!) I guess I found it difficult because of the pace at which you have to learn everything. But I made it. Goes to show you can do anything you put your mind to! I now am gainfully employed in the local ER. Guess the fast-paced stuff grew on me!!

Thanks ATYLER'08! The nursing program at Gaston College is very difficult but prepares you well for the NCLEX. I believe the pass rate for the NCLEX on first attempt is 95%+! You will get lots of clinical hours and experience that is very helpful. The costs for the ADN program is shown on the GC website at www.gaston.edu. Look under the Degree Programs, Health Sciences, Nursing-Associates Degree. I would add $500-1000 to the total for the ATI program and the clinical experience at the Chapel Hill Burn Center. As far as advice....Have confidence in yourself! Jump at every opportunity in clinical to practice your skills. When you get to the semester that requires you to complete Concept Maps on your clients, I would suggest getting a good book of nursing care plans to help you. I would easily spend 10 or more hours on each one! I hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!!

Hello evrybody!! I'm a new ADN grad May 06, I live in the foothills of NC in a small town called North Wilkesboro. I'm schelduled to take NCLEX July 7th, I'm taking 100-150 questions a day using saunders and kaplan. I'm just praying that I pass. I more than ready to start work, I have a job waiting at a great hospital (in my opinion) working on a med/surg, pediatric and overflow mother/bady unit. My goal is to work either in L&D or NICU. Everybody pls just remember me in yours prayers that I'll pass on the first try.:D

Hey yall (southern for hi everyone) I am a 22 year veteran of Critical Care Nursing..... The past 18 years I have worked in the Pinehurst area. Live in Rockingham. I am 2 hours from the beach and 4 hours from the mountains. Best of both worlds. My unit is a CVTSU. We recover open hearts as well as surgical, vascular, trauma, and occ medical overflow. I am a CCRN and one of the senior nurses in my unit... My specialty lies in Hemodynamics, which I love to teach :) My daughter just graduated nursing school and my son will graduate nursing school next May.

Hello all, i am a new grad from Cali (bay area) studing to take my NCLEX. I went to Raleigh area for my husband interview and did some sight seeing and talked to UNC chapell Hill HR rep. I swear, i felt like i was slapped on my face when she told me that starting in UNC is $18 vs $40-45 in Cali. Don't get me wrong, i am no money hungry but damn, that is low. In any case my question is, if I come with 1 year experience what is the pay range and also what about if I go thru agency...would the pay be much better?

THanks for you answer in advance!!!
