Ok folks - it is that time again .... there are many new names and faces (well avatars anyway) on our web site ... time to get to know the North Carolina people.
Lets give a location - why you are there, your current nursing status and anything else you might want to share ....
I am Patrick, the moderator for the North Carolina Forum ... live in Asheville - moved here a year ago from Florida and love the mountains and the moderate climate .... can tell you that Hurricane Frances breezed through town last week and gave us a lot of headaches! Anyway, I am a nurse manager for a med-surg unit and a single father of 3. I attend the University of Phoenix and am hoping to graduate with my BSN-MSN in the very near future.
Hello Everyone. I am currently a graduate from the Accelerated BSN(13 month) Option at WSSU. I live in Greensboro, NC. I will be taking my NCLEX soon. I am happy to be apart of this site!
I have a friend that is interesting in starting the program at WSSU. She wants to know what you think of the program there.
I also live in Greensboro but am still in the process of finishing my prereqs. I'm taking A&P I and communications this semester. Next semester, I'll take my last two prereqs. Not sure what I'll take this summer because as you might know, most of the schools around here go by points. Since, I've not worked in the medical field nor do I have my BS, my points come strickly from grades. I'm doing pretty good in A&P I so far but it is so time consuming that I don't know if I can handle it in the summer.I've applied to a school in Winston Salem that will accept bio 163 for the LPN program. I took 163 as my biology class but only got a 'C' in the class so I don't know if it'll be good enough to get me in. If not, I'll just have to wait until I take A&P II next semester and wait and hope that I'm accepted.
If I get accepted to the LPN program, then I'll bridge to the RN program. I have a couple of friends that became LPN's first and they said that they had an advantage over the students that had never been LPN especially in clinicals.
Anyhow, happy to read that we live in the same city.

I was accepted into the LPN program at Fosyth Tech starting this fall. I am so excited!!! The only problem is gas prices but it'll only be for a year. Even though I've been accepted, I must have completed the CNA before class starts. I'll do that after this semester ends which is in three weeks.
YIPEE!! I'm on my way.
My name is Nancy and I am a RN in Fl. I've lived here for the past year and my husband and I hate it here so we are moving northward. I just got into UNC-Chapel Hill's MSN program and will be there this summer. We are so excited that we called an agent and put the house up for sale the same day I got my acceptance letter. I am just happy to be getting out of FL and doing something new. I've heard for ages how NC was an awesome place to raise a family so I am stoked to be coming w/ my 3 yo girl and 11 mo old boy.
Where are some nice, family-friendly, and affordable areas to live? I've heard of Cary and Hillsborough. I am coming to visit for the 1st time in 2 weeks. What are the nicer areas in Durham if I was interested in living there? I see Chapel Hill is rather expensive.
I am planning on working while in school. What are some of the nicer hospitals to work in? I know of the two with the big-dollar reputations but I'm interested in a package and not just reputation. I want to be where the nurses are mostly glad to come to work (let's face it... there's no 100%), get paid decently and the benefits are good. I have intervs lined up at Wake Med and Durham Reg. with 1 pending at Duke Hosp. Any opinions on these places? Any other place I should check out?
What can I expect pay-wise over there (OB RN w/ BSN and 2+ yrs exp)? I usually work 7p-7a. Are Baylor programs popular over there? How are pool nurses paid? Any place giving reloc or sign-on bonuses? Loan repayment?
I know I asked a lot of questions. Your response would be appreciated. the best info doesn't come rom the recruiters.... it comes straight from the trenches.
Thanks,
Nancy

Hello everyone,
I am Kathy - recently moved from my birth town of Sarasota FL, with my family (husband, grown son, 2 greyhounds and 3 cats ) , to the home of my heart :heartbeat , the mountains of NC. I am now in West Jefferson, Ashe County.
I'm an RN of 23 years and a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant - I help lawyers win cases and de-jargon medical records, among other things :)
I'm still waiting on my reciprocation from the NC nursing board and needing work - but all in G-d's good time!

Hi everyone,
I'm Marcia. I am from Fayetteville N.C currently living in Holly Springs. We live about 5 minutes from Raleigh. I have been a CNAII for eleven years, and I have worked in all types of medicine. I enjoy cardiac, and pedatrics the most. I am currently enrolled at Kaplan University in Healthcare management BS program. I plan to start taking pre-reqs for the RN program in the fall at Durham tech. I will keep taking my pre-reqs until I get accepted into the program. I have looked at other schools like wake tech, however, I have seen that they make you take a pre assesment test before you can consider as a canidate for the ADN program.?????????. I have found that alot of schools have moved to that direction. I think we will be taking enough test in classes, and before you get accepted to the school. My opinion...... It is nice to meet other nurses in the area.
BazzYRN, the best palce to work if you are going to move to cary is WAKEMED cary. Great Place. Also they are buildiing another hospital in APex N.C which will not be far from you soon. The pay is good and the hopital will be smaller. The whole hospital system is very lucrative, and the hospital has made the most money over the past two years over DUKE, And UNC. would say REX would be my next choice. Great Place!
