Thanks! Wow, I thought differential payment for night shifts were more like time-and-a-half but evidently I was wrong.

No, differentials are usually a flat rate or a percentage.

Kind of an aside; if you work 12 hour shifts, most places don't pay you time and a half for the hours for any hours of your regular 12 hour shift, you won't get overtime unless you go over your 12 hours or go over 40 hours a week (California law anyway). Because the normal working shift is 12 hours, it would be extremely expensive to pay each nurse time and a half for anything over 8 hours.

Alabama...where i am, i started at 20.10/hour. $3 more for 3-11, and $4 more for 11-7. So, working nights I average about 23.50/hour as a new grad. No sign on bonus, but benefits are GREAT..they pay off student loans..up to $400 a month with a cap at $25,000. And i ont have to contract with them. They will begin paying after three months employment, and continue to pay as long as you are employeed there, whether it be 6 months or 6 years.

Almost 29.00 hr in New Jersey as new grad on Med-surg.

I didn't receive any sign-on bonus with my hospital. :( But the new grads in the Phoenix area start out at $25/hr.

In NC. I just started at a well know hospital in Raleigh NC and they started me at 22.23. Shift diff for 3-7($4)

11-7($6). So since I will be working 7p-7a. I will make 26.23-28.23. Here is the kicker. On the weekends which start on Fridays. I will be making 1X 2/3 on the hour which is 38.90. I don't have to work weekends just Mon-Friday,Three 12's. So about 55,000 a year but that if I never make overtime which I doubt that will happen.

When you're talking about nurse pay rates, it's all about location, location, location.

For example, the new RN in the San Francisco Bay area of California can reasonably expect to earn in excess of $40 per hour. On the other hand, the new RN in rural Kansas can expect to earn $18 hourly. It all depends on your geographic location.

In addition, cities with too many schools of nursing tend to have low pay rates due to the local job market being overly saturated with excess nurses. If there are too many nurses in an area with not enough jobs to go around, the wages will drop.

I started out at 62,000 a year. I went back for my BSN and went up to $67,000, I am in the state of Florida. Having a BSN helps if you go up the clinical ladder--that is the only place where I see an actual monetary incentive given if you have your BSN or MSN

Does anyone know what the starting RN pay is in Tucson, Arizona? I have just graduated with my BSN. I also have 6 years experience as an LPN and 13 years experience as a PCT/CNA. I am meeting with the top nursing supervisor of my company to discuss where I will be working once I pass my NCLEX exam. I know that the topic of pay will come up and I have no idea what to ask for. I have been with this company fo 5 years. Any ideas? Thanks.
