I have met more and more people like me who are going back to school to get into nursing programs.
I am a non-traditional student, 37 years old..been a SAHM for about 13 years, but in the workforce for the past year. I didn't finish school the first time and now I'm starting back next week. I figured out I have about 8 classes to do to apply to the Nursing program.
I am already working in LTC full time, so I think it will take me 3 or 4 semesters to finish those up. I think I'm at a disadvantage with time, but I've got an advantage with a bit of mileage under my belt if you know what I mean. My oldest son and I can commute to college together next year.
Anybody else?
Yes I am (or will be since I am not a student yet) non traditional. I am almost 39 and have been married 20 years with a 9 year old dd whom I homeschool. I have never been to college and have never learned algebra. :uhoh21:
I am trying to decide whether to go for my LPN first or start prereqs for RN.
I'm 26, and a second degree student. Taking one class at a time while I work as a social worker. This is the last semester of that, though. After this semester my husband and I will be moving, then I'll work as a CNA until I get admitted (hopefully into a ABSN program). No kids--I have no idea how people manage going to school, working, and kids!
Good luck to all! We shouldn't feel bad because we took a different path to get here. I strongly believe there is a reason for everything.
Yep me too, I worked 50-60 hrs a week on a ambulance working 24hr shifts as a paramedic, managed 25 employees and scheduled them, I have two 16 yo boys, married to a Paramedic-RN and managed to go full time to school as well.. BUT YOU CAN DO IT!!! I just finished Dec. 11th and passed boards on Dec. 30.....
Me too....I'll be 38 in April, 2 kids, 7 and 3...now that 3yo is in preschool..time for me to think about getting out into the real world again. I have my college prep/accuplacer test tomorrow...and want to take the LPN program part time. I hopefully should be able to get all the pre-reqs by fall....if not next spring.....
Have a great day!

I am a 36 year old wife and mother of a 14.5 year old son and 11 year old twins (girl and boy). I had to take off a year from Nursing studies to work full-time; this tore my insides up. I am back in school, I hope to weork part-time as a caregiver (the hours are very flexible) for now. It is very challanging and I applaude all GROWN FOLKS returning to school. You never stop learning. Good Luck to ALL!
To all the non-traditional students out there- GOD BLESS and GO FOR IT!!! :chuckle
I too am a non-traditional student and we have a lot more to offer in terms of life experience and maturity. When I was taking my prerequisites, my entire study group were made up of individuals who were over 30years. We as non traditional students are "grown, sexy and smart":w00t:
The nursing community need more of us out there for our life lessons and nurturing natures.
I am also a non-traditional student. I am a 37 year old father of 2 boys. I have worked in the IT industry for the last 20 years. I have worked as an EMT and on for the National Ski Patrol. I decided I really wanted to get back into the medical field. I feel that is my true calling and am really looking forward to it. I have finished all my prereqs and have just turned in my application. I will hopefully be starting the program Fall 09. Good luck to all and stay motivated. We have all experienced quite a bit and I feel it will really help with our future endeavors.

Another non-traditional student here. I'm 36 & married. I've been a SAHM of 3 boys (11, 8, 6) since I quit my job in 2005. I already have a bachelors in business admin. and have about 3 pre-reqs to go before I can apply for the HIGHLY competitive nursing program at AASU. I took the NET in December & nearly freaked out when I didn't even get to FINISH the Reading Comp section. I'm re-taking it next week to try to pass the Reading Comp. I got a 92 on the Math. Good luck to all of us non-traditionals.....at least we have life experience & maturity on our side.
