Non Nurse Threads

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have noticed a few threads from non nurses who post threads asking for our opinions about the care they or thier family members received in the hospital. They usually want to know if everything was appropriate. If they are asking, then something probably was wrong. Sometimes we find out later in the thread that they are getting or already have a lawyer or a case pending. Is it really such a good idea for us to answer these type of posts? This BB is for nurses, us. Not for ANYONE ELSE, IMO.

As the great philosopher Dennis Miller once said, "That's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

:roll [/b]

You are!

First of all, as the person who posted the question about a family member, I'm not suing anybody. I have never sued anybody. If I were ever to file a malpractice lawsuit against somebody, it wouldn't be over anything short of gross negligence, and I wouldn't troll for advice on an anonymous nursing web-board. "Yes, your honor, OBNurseHeather said that was just plain bad nursing. And Rusty Hammer. Uh, I'm not sure if that's his real name. I think he's a male nurse, though." I posted the thread for the precise reason I said I was posting. I don't like the idea of people who would blow off my sister's pain and was hoping for another explanation for it. I got several. I appreciated it. As far as pizza delivery goes, how long is five minutes to you when you're hurting really badly?

As far as lurkers and trolls go -- if you lurk, troll, and make trouble on someone else's board, they will find you and will come to lurk, troll, and make trouble on your board. This is pretty elementary, actually. So if you don't want people to show up, don't post links to their board to mock them and then register over there to harrass them. Duh. Why should the women of bf.com respect your privacy? You didn't respect theirs.

Please, if you can, tell me where I'm wrong?

Is it that many on this thread seem so paranoid they look for eyes in their toilets?

Is it that I doubt the usefulness of material from this tread in any legal proceedings or the desire of any lawyer to undergo an extensive e-mail search to uncover it?

Or is it that I'm opposed to restrictive measures that would restrict free speech in any form -- including this forum.

As a person that wasn't always a nurse, I'm appalled by some of the statements I read on here from people that supposedly care for and about others. Considering the positive movements on behalf of nursing that I believe is beginning to sweep this nation, some of these types may have to re-think their profession or alter their attitudes.

Yes, we are professionals. Let's try to act like such and maintain the clear thought processes on this forum that I hope we all have when treating our patients.

This message has surely given some of your bad-attitude, always pissed-off individuals plenty of fodder. Let my trashing begin!

Good grief, it's getting nasty here! Guess I'll rethink things!

I guess if you or your friends were FIRED over saying their orientation was shoddy or their manager was horrible on a website, YOU'D feel the same way too.

Especially then if you tried to find another job and XYZ Hospital was faxing your posts to EVERY HOSPITAL IN A 50 MILE RADIUS, and those hospitals questioned hiring you. I think by then perhaps, you might find yourself with an "attitude."

Unless you feel those employers were justified? Is that what you are saying? Are you saying that for us to feel guarded here and leary, after our friends being FIRED over what this board, is just plain ridiculous? If so, then I hope and pray that your naivete pays off, because it sure didn't for two long time users and friends here.

I appreciate your post here, but until YOU have a license (and therefore, livlihood) to lose over things, you will never understand how nurses and other medical professionals tread lightly over issues like this. Even doctors have known to order tests we call "CYA tests" to simply prevent him/her from being sued. While YOU may not want to personally sue anybody, alot of people DO.

I have known nurses who have been left to dry, with no income as a result of a lawsuit, despite an incorrect order from two physicians and a pharmacist. She has no job now and a family to feed.

We have heard of nurses facing JAIL TIME for medication errors.

These are REAL issues, so yeah, we will be a little "weird" to you about it but it's real serious for us. This is my JOB, my bread and butter and it pays the bills. I have to constantly be on the lookout for whatever I do and say, as it may end up in court one day. And you can't just say "well do what's right and you'll be ok." No. That's not reality.

As far as the 5 minutes in answering a call light; well yes I can understand someone is in pain, but then write to your congressman about that because that has nothing to do with the nurse and EVERYTHING to do with the NURSING SHORTAGE!

Complain to them, and make a difference.

Well said!

It really bothers me that peoples resonse to feeling threatened by the incidents that have occurred is to become more elitist. To try and label the enemy and keep them out.

Well, you can't keep them out - the people that hurt you most are your co-workers and managers. ie nurses, like you, who may have an agenda that involves harming another nurse's career.

Good fences make good neighbours, indeed.

I propose that instead of supplying our license number, we should all be required to pass a "niceness" and "honesty" test before being allowed to read these boards.

Ya know what? I'm getting a little tired of people that think every nurse in Mother freakin Theresa. I love my patients, I'd do anything for them, I've p*ssed off DON's and MD's in my patients defense and best interest. But I come home and sometimes, God forbid, have an opinion of my own that falls outside of the "give me your poor, give me your hungry..." martyrdom that foolish people assiciate with nursing.

"I'm appalled that a nurse would think that." Puhleeze!

Why is it so difficult for you to see that nurses can be p*ssed off at things sometimes, and vent about them (eek - out loud!). It doesn't mean I treat my patients any differently or with any less respect. Nurses are human, and have negative thoughts sometimes too. Were you all this upset when you found out there wasn't a Santa Claus?

And get off the breastfeeding crap. It's over, and for you guys to keep thinking that everything is about you is getting quite comical. Nurses have met our enemies, and they are our own kind. That is what we are referring to in this thread. Everything else is just amusement.

I love Heather!

Heather...........:kiss

I'm a new member to this site. I find it informative, entertaining, thought provoking, and yes, sometimes aggravatings. I've followed the threads regarding the nurses losing their jobs because of postings to this site and I find it appalling. I can't help but think that the nurse who's postings are being faxed to area hospitals to keep her from being employed has her own libel suit brewing. She should speak to an attorney NOW!.

Having said all that...I would never join a bulletin board that required my Nursing License for registering. That is confidential information and and should be guarded. It just behooves us all to be careful about what we say...vent in generalities and not specifics. This is a great forum and it's a dirty rotten shame that our postings have to be self-censored so carefully, but let's not ban others lest we be banned. Nursing is indeed a noble profession....unfortunately not all nurses are noble.

I for one will be more careful how I word my postings from here on in....it's a shame that we have to respond to paranoia by becoming paranoid...but I guess that's the rub.
