Non Nurse Threads

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have noticed a few threads from non nurses who post threads asking for our opinions about the care they or thier family members received in the hospital. They usually want to know if everything was appropriate. If they are asking, then something probably was wrong. Sometimes we find out later in the thread that they are getting or already have a lawyer or a case pending. Is it really such a good idea for us to answer these type of posts? This BB is for nurses, us. Not for ANYONE ELSE, IMO.

Wow, this thread is....what it is. I have decided my own course as to thwart potential problems from posting. I am not suggesting that anyone follow my lead nor am I asking you to do so. Every one of us nurses here must do what is comfortable for themselves.

My plan:

1. I will not answer threads or posts that are questioning a nurses competence or that may be used by patients or family members to formulate opinions about the care they recieved. I will do this out of respect for all my fellow nurses, as I have not heard the nurses side of the story, and do not have enough information to formulate a fair opinion. I also will do this so that this BB does not become "known" as "the place" to go to milk nurses for free medical advice and opinions.

2. I will not post my picture.

3. I will not post any personal information. In order to protect my family from wierdo's and cyberstalkers. Besides, it's really nobodys business but my own.

4. I will not answer threads that have been started by those who are obviously not nurses but are posing as nurses so that they can get thier kicks or start BS.

5. I will not post links or the address of my website as this is easily traceable to me personally, my address, phone number, etc.

6. I will not post negative comments about my coworkers that contain details that could be linked to me or my workplace.

7. I will never post information about patients that could be considered a breech in confidentiality. As I am sworn as a nurse to do.

8. I will edit my posts and change my user name as often as I like and in anyway I see fit. As to remain as anon as possible.

9. I will not register with a email that is through my own ISP.

10. I will cry tonight as I have, to some degree, lost my freedom of speech. Ruined by some really mean people.

So there you have it. This BB used to be such a great place to come and be able to talk to other nurses, get support, get ideas, etc. Now, there is so much anger, finger pointing name calling, and frustration, especially in light of what happened. We seemed to have lost that special place to come and be comfortable posting our problems. I have a dream that forums like this will be the spring board for sweeping changes in our profession. Our ability to talk about problems, offer advice, support one another...well I guess it was just all too good to be true. Now spoiled by aggresive invaders into our private lives. They just couldn't leave us alone to solve our problems. Our power comes from the ability to come on forums and talk but we must be able to talk freely without the fear of identification, potential prosicution, or of losing our jobs. So my defense will be to keep coming on the BB to discuss but within certain guidelines that will help keep me safe from the invaders and from the nurses with fangs.

I want to let the student nurses know that I love having them here. I need to hear a fresh perspective and I love to post supportingly of them..... well, somebodys got to take the younguns under thier wings and teach them the ways! I'm not so sure this BB is the best place to form an opinion of deciding to enter the field. Reading the posts would send most people running in the oposite direction and although we have our problems, some of them very major, keep in mind that this is our place to vent. You are not getting the whole picture by coming to a BB. I also don't mind the occasional allied health professional coming here to get a nurses perspective. It's nice when we help others to understand what we do.

Really though, the name of the site is allnurses. Get it? ALL NURSES. Can't we have anyplace to call our very own? Like maybe an invitation only section??? We should also be able to freely change our handle on the main BB's while maintaining our invited status. Once inside the invited area we could use a different name that stays constant in the invited area. These invitees would be chosen by the moderators and could be nominated by BB users. What do ya say Brian? Any chance?

Invitation only?

You know, there must be some other sites around that are more private if you all want to go there....

I think this thread makes you all sound paranoid and stuck-up.

pebbles, Yeah, invitation only. So what? Are you afraid you won't get invited to our party? :crying2: You know, I think it is YOU who sounds stuck up and are the one calling people names.

Same here. I have so many prereqs to get out of the way first, before I can enroll as a nursing student. So the idea of getting a student ID number to check if I'm a nursing student wouldn't work for me.

*starting to feel quite unwelcome around here* :o

(((((((((Figaro's Mom)))))))))) I love you, Figaro! You are MOST welcome hear, so don't go feeling down. You read what Brandy said......Brian has NO intention of making this BB for nurses only.

I think we're just blowing off steam because a couple of our Allnurses siblings were hurt from someone who had it out for them......PLUS.....the last couple days, there's been a lot of unecessary INVASIONS of the Outer Limit kind on this BB, and has many peoples hormones raging....and rightly so...but we wouldn't want to lose our most favorite people. :nono: Not I anyway! :rotfl: Just let it die down, and the troublemakers will go away. Okay......feel better now? :kiss

Well, on a site that is curently unrestricted, and has more than 20,000 members  um, filtering out the "ratfinks" is gonna take a little more work... and I just think it can't be done. How do you "add" those features onto a site that already has such a large membership base besides scrapping teh site and forcing us all to re-register? That is one solution, I grant you....

Go to any BB site on the internet and read stories of people who trusted enough to post detailed information about themselves, their situation, links to their own websites, etc.... and got burned. It's everywhere.

The sites that don't have those problems are the closed fee for service sites that screen users, and have very strict rules about behaviour that gets people kicked.

Maybe if someone wants to post a link to a site like that, or start one up, that could be a solution.

Has anyone asked Brian (after all he is the guy who runs this site) what HE is willing to do to keep out the undesirables?

to protect us from our own trusting nature?

The suggestions so far sound expensive and very labour intensive and just not very practical at all.

All you need to do is watch what you say, and you won't get burned. I mean, you watch what you say at work, watch who you talk politics with already don't you? You have to pick who you can trust in this world... and picking "x" website isn't a very discerning choice.... 20, 000 members. YOu wanna trust everybody just because it says "allnurses" at the top of the page?

There are other ways you can buld trusting relationships with people on this site. But posting everything out in the open just isn't it.

People please, keep it civil. No need for personal attacks or taking post so personal. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, you don't have to agree, but let's not get so worked up and angry.

Just for the record, there are no plans to restrict the registration from what it is now.

This topic is being closed. Please keep the board a civil place and not so agressive and threatening to others.
