No Worker Left Behind

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi Michiganians, (that sounds incorrect, oh well you guys are great)

I know there was a long discussion last year on the issue and i wanted to find out what you guys are hearing. i contacted the person in charge of the program and she let me know that they have run out of funds? anyone hear the same?

thanks, I may try that out.

Now that I have my admission letter I'll have to check into the Oak Park branch.

This may be a stupid question but I'm hoping someone can answer it anyway. In order to qualify for NWLB, do you have to be unemployed already??? I am currently employed, make a decent amount of money, but when my accelerated nursing program starts I will be unemployed. Do they consider that, or do I have to wait to apply when I am unemployed?

Called three times now and she doesn't answer or hasn't returned the call...:( Hopefully she will before the end of the week. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Well, spoke with someone today from the OP branch and she said their funding is all gone. She said the ones who have picked up vouchers were previously funded and those funds have run out. So, back to the drawing board of being on a wait list. And from the sounds of it, she said she isn't sure there will be any more funds coming....

bugsmom, thanks for the update. :nono:

I was told to wait until July and they would know more. Ya have to figure with all those people on the waitlist if they will use all their new funds up as soon as they get it. I really dont want to go through all those time consuming appointments for the second time to be told they are out of money.

Anyone else already do the hoop jumping and now back on their second round? I dont see why they dont save all that tabe testing , etc.

That is disconcerting. Bummer. Maybe I'll wait and see what happens in July. The Michigan Nursing Scholarship is gone as well (from what I hear). Man, what other options do we have besides student loans (which I hope I can get)?

Criswithnoh, I'm thinking loans are the only thing we have left to count on....I'm bummed too. I sure hope some more funding comes our way in July :)

Has anyone heard any new news? I have searched the net and cant find anything. My husband said that he heard on the radio the other day that all the funding will be gone at the end of July unless they approve new funding. You would think there would be something in the newspaper about it by now.

Hi,

I was just approved for my NWLB funding but am waiting on the money. I was told there is funding but the state has ordered all offices to wait till after July 1st to distribute. Some offices do not have any money and are not offering orientations. Also, I recommend anyone who is having difficulty to go the Detroit-Conner office. I went to two others and was spinning my wheels with misinformation, etc. The conner office was great. But it seems like preference is going to those who were laid off from work and then everyone else. But you won't be disappointed if you go there. Hope this helps. Good luck.

How long was your process from start to finish at the Conner office. Also what is required for eligibility. I applied at the Jackson County office and have not heard anything as of yet about an appointment with a caseworker. I am thinking about going to the Monroe County office and applying. Thanks for any info. Have anyone else had any recent positive outcomes with the NWLB program?

Hi Tiffany. Since I already had my orientation at another office, I was able to get an appointment with a case manager pretty quickly. But you need to know what documents are required to bring to your case manager - this is all explained at the orientation. If you have your paperwork in order, you will fill out some other documents during your case manager meeting. Then the paperwork is submitted for final approval. I would say the whole process took 3-4 weeks. I highly recommend this office if you are having any issues elsewhere. Even if you went to another orientation, go here for another one and then get an appm't with a case manager. I found this office to be very helpful with no BS. Good luck.
