No Worker Left Behind

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi Michiganians, (that sounds incorrect, oh well you guys are great)

I know there was a long discussion last year on the issue and i wanted to find out what you guys are hearing. i contacted the person in charge of the program and she let me know that they have run out of funds? anyone hear the same?

I just read the update on funding. If you were already approved for funding they will give you the money but there wont be many more new people approved, it just depends on the branch. The program funding is pretty much dried up now. I cant believe I wasted so much time at the MIWorks office 2 summers ago and now I am applying for my program in Sept. just in time for the money to run out. Looks like I will need to take out loans.

Hi, for anyone waiting, my case manager is supposed to let me know the funding update by Tuesday. I know Detroit Conner was one of the few offices which had money - but I also heard priority was going for those who were laid off. But if money is still there, I'll let you guys know. It's a quick process at that office like I said. No games. Just facts and great help. I can't say the same for another office I was at.

Try the Jackson office , I know she will let u email or fax her your documentation and call you back with a date for the paperwork. I'm not sure if they have funding or not but when I called 2 weeks ago they did and she told me what to do. It is frustrating to know u have to go through so much just to get help for schooling.

Thanks, let us know how it works out for you. I hope you are still able to get in on the last bit of money available. I really cant attend an orientation that far away. Michigan Works has only cost me time, money , and aggravation so far. I paid gas and a babysitter to go there many times and have not gotten any money.

Good Luck to those seeking help to pay for nursing school. Have you considered Pell Grants? Scholarships? and yes the dreaded Student loans? Once I received my acceptance letter things moved quickly to get onto the NWLB. I had filled out all the necessary paperwork aka "hoop jumping" at least two months before I got the letter. I am one of those people who does things yesterday for results today...guess you would call me "anal" but it does pay off in the long run.

I know the hoops are frustrating but if you dont have to use student loans to get your education, thats a plus. Half of my education it paid for with Pell Grants thank goodness.

I wish you all good luck!!!

Thats good to hear Teresa. I went to Miworks 2 years ago for results today and now they would be making me start the process all over again if there were any more money. I asked them to hold my paperwork, testing, etc but they wouldnt.

My best advice to anyone out there is to be persistent - there is money left. This program is not new but has been out for many years under a different name. I would also recommend anyone looking to get the money is to find a office which a). Has money b). won't make you go to a bunch of seminars - unless you are really new at job searching or computers, etc. For example, I had 15 years of professional work experience and a college degree so I was not required to go to any seminars. Finally, its key to have an acceptance to an approved program..If you don't, the process comes to a halt. I keep saying Detroit Conner and I cannot stress this enough - it worked for me and the process was done in less than two months. Good luck

Good advice ejcl. I'm going through the Ypsi office, and although I have to do the seminars, it's a small price to pay for hopefully $5k. Plus, I'll probably just bring my Pharmacology notes with me and study for my final exam during the seminars LOL.

Hiya Dave...

I'm also going through the Ypsi office. I submitted my application for the program the day before the fit hit the shan. I remember watching the news at at night and thinking, "Aw jeeze, well, that was a colossal waste of time." I did all the six seminars, the TABE, etc., and I had all my paperwork nicely organized and waiting in a folder for...well...I guess the apocalypse, now.

I guess I should have submitted the application first and THEN done all my requirements, huh? That's what I get. Sigh.

I'm guessing my application is sitting on the bottom of the stack, the stack that will get swept into the rubbish bin shortly. I'm not holding my breath anyway.

Good luck to you!

For whatever it's worth, my case manager emailed me today and said anyone already approved (or on a waiting list)will get the money - the rest of the people unfortunately it's still not clear. This is the latest information. So that's why I emphasize doing your homework, etc. before doing a bunch of seminars. The seminars I believe weed out those who are not serious about this but to me, I think they are unnecessary unless one is very "green". Frankly, why would I want to attend resume writing when I already have to post a resume to the website. Seems silly. Good luck.

I haven't even taken the seminars yet (my first is on Monday). But I did take the TABE. I figure, if it works out, then great, if it doesnt, then I wasted a few hours of time. As long as Im funded sometime before May of 2011, I'll be happy.

Well, I just got off the phone with my case worker. Looks they they are indeed stopping the program. Any offices that still have funds will probably use those funds to continue funding those students that have already started receiving their funding. She said some office might be operating slightly different, but she doubts anyone will take on new applicants at this time. I think at this point, I'm going to give up on it. No sense in attending 4 days of workshops if there really isn't any hope. And with the economy and budget cuts, I don't see any new funding becoming available any time soon. Looks like it student loans and home equity :-(
