No Shortage of Nursing in Bay,S.F, and Sacramento Area!

It is true that it is more competitive finding a job right now in the Sacramento area. The same old cycle is happening again.... stay tuned for the return of the shortage in a few years. Kaiser is letting all their LVN's go by the end of the year, so that may help the RN's looking for jobs in the short term. Still I don't see as much demand for new grads.

while some areas are becoming more competitive, I was offered 3 positions as a new grad- 2 in Er, 1 on a Tele unit. The jobs are still out there, at least in my opinion....

if you don't mind, can i ask which hospitals you applied? I am a new grad looking for a job, but I didn't hear anything from any hospital so far....

How can this be?

I think it's a combination of factors. When the ratio law took effect a couple of years ago where patient loads were limited by law (Cali is the only state that has a ratio law) .... lots of nurses moved and/or started taking travel assignments here. Especially nurses who were tired of heavy patient loads in other states.

And, despite the higher cost of living (COL), many of them worked in the Bay Area because the wages are the highest in the nation and, well ... it's the Bay Area. Lots of people want to live there even with the higher COL.

Nurses who didn't want to pay the higher COL have been travelling here for a few months, banking a lot of money, and going back home ... because they can make much more here in a few months than what they can make in their home states for an entire year. A lot of travelers also don't want to work in other states because that means going back to much higher patient loads.

So there's been signs of a nursing surplus in the Bay Area for awhile now. There's probably still jobs but, the shortage isn't nearly as bad as other areas of the country or, other areas of California, for that matter.

Hi folks:
Searched jobs in Bay area, San Francisco and Sacramento. With 3 yrs experiences, only got a few crappy job offers. One is Oakland, One is in U.C Davis to deal with trach and trauma patients, And another in Redwood area.
Looked into South Cal, Jobs plenty, the pay is too low for the rent.
Anyway, I am giving up my California dream. Maybe I will move to Texas. John

Don't come to the panhandle- there is a huge surplus of nurses here!

Someday soon, it will finally dawn on everyone that the shortage is a myth.

I believe there's still SHORTAGE of nurses in Bay, S.F. and Sacto. I just recently got a job there in NorCal with better hourly rate and full benefits. It also depends which area in the hospital you're applying for, also depends on your years of experience. Nothing will lose if you throw your application form or go to hospital's website for on-line application. There's plenty of hospitals there in North California, one thing I like they are unionized which you can't find in other places.

My conclusion: Bay and Sacrament areas don't have as many nursing jobs as other states. That is for sure.

One may land a job there if she can stay unemployed for a couple months. John

I am a new grad RN from LA, and Im planning to move to Bay area to get a job. I kinda have to move where the wages are high, becuase I am under so much debt of student loans. Any suggestions which hospitals to apply to???

Sounds like i may be harder to get a job out there. My advice to you is to find a job there before you move while you work here in LA. However, if you really have to UCSF is a really good place to work from what I have been told. My roomies mum works at the UCDavis PACU and she loves it so check that out too.

Kaiser South (by Elk Grove) is going to build a trauma hospital and Kaiser Roseville is also expanding. Hopefully, by the time I graduate in Spring 09 there will be jobs available.

I don't want to discourage you, but It's really difficult to get a job in No. Cal. as a New Grad. I applied New Grad Programs, but I only received one call for an interview. They said that over 100 New Grad Rns applied for 10 positions.

I live in Berkeley, CA. I think you were too hasty in turning down the job at Kaiser Hospital Oakland. I've spent plenty of time in that area, and I would hardly call it "high crime," at least compared to anywhere else around here. It's very close to Piedmont Avenue, which is rather upscale, with some excellent restaurants and cool shopping. Housing in Oakland is also relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of the Bay Area, so you would be able to make your money go farther living there. Maybe you should take a trip to CA and check it out before you make any major career moves.
