Hi folks:
Searched jobs in Bay area, San Francisco and Sacramento. With 3 yrs experiences, only got a few crappy job offers. One is Oakland, One is in U.C Davis to deal with trach and trauma patients, And another in Redwood area.
Looked into South Cal, Jobs plenty, the pay is too low for the rent.
Anyway, I am giving up my California dream. Maybe I will move to Texas. John

What are the crappy offers you received? At what hospital in Oakland? What unit? There are some good hospitals in Oakland.

Sorry you had such a difficult time. What units did you work on before? What area/speciality are you looking for? Were you looking for 12 hour days or are you open to working nights? Or were you willing to work rotating days/nights (they switch every month)? Were you looking for a fulltime or part time job? Did you know you can work per diem at one hospital and part time at another and make some good money? Did you ever consider San Jose, Palo Alto or Los Gatos areas? They are further down the peninsula and there are several hospitals down there. And when you referred to "Redwood" area, did you mean Redwood City? or Redlands? (which are two very different locations); there is no "Redwood" in the Bay area. Let us know and perhaps we can help guide you further.

I worked at a med/surg unit for two yrs in a 600 bed large teaching hospital, dealing with trauma, neuro, ortho and surgical pt. I also worked at Med/Surg Tele for one yr so far. I was looking for a dayshift job. I couldn't work at nights because of sleeping problems.
I got a job in Kaiser Oakland which is located in a high crime area. Redwood city offered a job to deal with infectious disease. I applied jobs in South Bay like San Jose. I didn't hear anything from them. Maybe I have to be there physically. Thank you all for your good input. John

Yep, there is NO NURSING SHORTAGE in the Sacramento to Bay Area regions. John, you actually had it pretty good! Another RN and I attented a refresher course to get back into medical acute care from psych acute care... might as well never went to nursing school. I've even been turned down for home health care (which I've done in the past).
It appears that even new grads may be out of luck for awhile; hospitals are only looking for very recent experience in what ever unit type they're recruiting for... no new grads, ect., no matter how much experience you've had in the past, no matter how commited you are.

Its because CA is very competitive ... it takes mnths to find a job or even get a call for an interview.... I 'feel' ya, its frustrating and disappointing..

How can this be? I live in Sacramento and hear all the time how EVERY hospital around here is in need of nurses. There are new hospitals opening in the area soon (Roseville-Kaiser for example) that must need nurses. Has anyone here tried looking further south for jobs (such as Stockton, Lodi, Merced, etc.)? Also Sutter Davis hospital seems to always be hiring (and I believe they have a new grad program).
Wow...this thread may be the saddest I have read yet! I will start NS in January and had hoped to work in this region when I graduate in December.
Pug... its true ... no matter how they say theres 'supposedly' a shortage its extremely difficult to get a job out here. Im shocked myself. Though I still have a mth. to go as a LVN, I will eventually get my RN and have long researched around... even as a CMA trying to get into a hospital as CMA so then when Im done w my LVN I could just move into a nuring position.. Ive applied since May of this yr. and have been turned down numerous times! All ads I see they want Rns w 3-5 yr exp. or even as LVN we arent allowed in many of the hospitals.. rather SNFs or just per diem work. We have a new instructor for our Peds class and she has oodles of exp as a RN and she said for 8 mths they called her for only one other job besides this instructor position and shes on the registry. In my own opinion.. yes there may be a shortage of nurses somewhere.. but everyone too much of a stickler to hire anyone. All my near 5 yr exp as a CMA, which I did a LOT of nursing work not just MA work .. will be a wash and they wont see that as exp. Even some jobs see Im almost done w nursing school and they dont want to hire me thinking that when Im done I will go somewhere else.. I keep telling them I want to find somewhere and grow! long term! Ive tried John Muir, county, Sutter and numerous Private offices and dont hear a peep! Im freaking out ! But let me tell you other states are HUNGRY for workers.. and they are more flexible. They see us as a nurse.. but here in CA they want to see lots and lots of solid exp. no matter how good references or what exp we DO HAVE! My advice, just look early on.. and also some hospitals which now I cant remember I think Sutter or John Muir offers a new grad 5 wk program .. which that may be a good option but its only for new RNS and I think its only offered once or twice a yr.... who knows! Good luck!

I've seen very few job postings since graduation several months ago, but all or almost all of my classmates have found jobs--the secret is working as an intern or extern during school, so you have the "in". And I think I probably would have had a job if I hadn't gone away during the summer. So don't despair completely.

while some areas are becoming more competitive, I was offered 3 positions as a new grad- 2 in Er, 1 on a Tele unit. The jobs are still out there, at least in my opinion....
