No jobs for LPN graduates anymore?

Published

I graduated in May 2006...A lot of hospitals are not hiring LPNs anymore and only hiring RNs..The job market is very competitive..I am very sad..:(

Our LPN instructor told someone that our college is going to discontinue the LPN program in the future since most hospitals are not hiring them anymore..:(

In my province there are more jobs than LPNs. It seems to be the dream of many to work l&d and postpartum, but although we don't work l&d here, we do work postpartum, but don't get a lot of LPNs applying (not that many full time positions, but loads of hours as a casual).

We work across the board, pretty much everywhere except l&d, and icus. Public health, active treatment, LTC, clinics, etc.

People need to be realistic. In today's world there aren't that many full time positions to walk into but you take a .5, make up the extra hours as a casual and before you know it you have enough hours seniority to bid on the full time jobs.

Up here it 2.5 years to bridge so that's not a realistic choice for many well seasoned pns to consider.

You know they did this in the UK at the end of 80's, yet they still trained EN (this is the equivelant in UK of LPN's) as they were called into the 90's knowing that there was jobs but that they would have to convert to RN status asap. The government did fund these nurses but it was a disgrace the way they were treated. YOu have my every sympathy, if it is any comfort a lot of the EN's who converted to RN status did really well and ended up with great jobs.

I live in CA too and I've been hearing that all the time that there are no jobs for lvns etc. in hospitals and that most hospitals want BSNs etc. I think that there might be other places that want LVNs. I noticed too that there are a lot of new private LVN programs in CA and its like odd and stupid if they have the programs but no where is hiring for LVNs. I think there are other alternatives if one dosen't get hired but I am sure that places such as LTC, ALF, Rehab centers, clinics, Home health, Hospices, travel nursing, cruise ships, VAs, government facilties, new towns that sprawl up, isolated areas, other states, etc. hire LVNs. Take Care.

I just started my job at a clinic as an LPN. It didn't take long for me to find it, but I guess that depends on the state in which you live. I'm in MN...we have this "wonderful" thing called the Magnet Program, which according to one instructor or two means that they're not only phasing out LPN's at hospitals, but ADN's too... there are some hospitals that will only take BSN's and MSN's now...they won't even let ADN program's have clinicals through their hospitals.

I think that just sucks! We had our OB rotation and my group also had our INP at a hosptial where there were mmm...maybe 3 or so LPN's on that floor. They're not taking any more.

I like clinics, luckily...I had my sights set on a clinic to begin with, but even there I think it comes down to the supervisor- I notice where the supervisor is a CMA- they only want CMA's. If the supervisor is an RN, they'll take LPN's too. But it seems that (and no offense) there is no place for an LPN any more; they do everything an RN does except, as stated above, the teeny weeny details. So why not just take the person who can do it all? I know that sounds horrible, and I personally don't like it but I can see where it makes sense: LPN can do A,B,C and E. But you have to step out and get a nurse to do step D. Why not just have someone who can do A-E?

They keep P-ing nad moaning about this "nursing shortage" in MN..I don't see that at ALL. I see corporate health care picking and choosing...and RN programs getting harder and harder to get into to where there's waiting lists through 2010...or like me you're dubbed "alternate 138" so that means if the whole nursing class quit 2.5 times I MIGHT get in! :uhoh3:

I like my clinic job so far and I thank my lucky stars that I have it!! If they only want RN's then they'd better get on the ball and start trying to start more up.

In my hospital in North Texas, there are many LVNs. On our Med Surg floor there are more LVNs than RNs. But L&D and newborn nursery hires only RNs here.

Where I live (phx, az) there are many LPN jobs out there. Just check out any sunday paper. Mostly nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities. I got lucky and got into an acute care facility (small hospital that deals with lots of disease processes, not a nursing home). But getting into a hospital is harder, and when you do, the pay sucks.

But the good thing about LPN is that you *are* a bit closer to RN. I start in Aug. Just 2 semesters of schooling. not bad, imo.

Just two semesters? Where is this at? Our cross over program is 2 years where I am at. Just interested!!!

I have been searching for a school for after I graduate but did not want to go 2 extra years. Others I would have to drive for are still a year program. You have to have all prereq's right?

When I graduated almost 3 years ago, I had hopes of working at our local hospital, i did most of my clinicals there and was very comfortable. And yes i wanted to work in postpartum. The hospital after i graduated told me they do not hire lpns even though they hired one that graduated a couple months ahead of me. I work in long term care now and i use all my skills d/t it is a skilled facility that i work in. Maybe i'll go back for my rn when my youngest startes school or maybe i won't. Oh and i can't stand the hospital that i so desperatly wanted to work in, and i make more than them. So I win.

This is the LPN/LVN thread about California not hiring LVN/LPN..:(

https://allnurses.com/forums/f137/lvns-being-hired-your-hospital-only-rns-hired-164443-2.html

I rapidly noticed that your thread only asked about LVN hospital jobs. Most of the California LVN jobs are in nursing homes, rehab centers, outpatient clinics, dialysis, home health, hospice, and other non-hospital settings.
