NJCU ABSN 2015

Published

The application for NJCU is open for both Wall and Jersey City! I thought I would make a thread for this years round of applicants. We can share our experience with NursingCAS and the HESI.

Hope y'all find this!

Hi, I called njcu and asked about taking the hesi after the deadline. At first I was told that the test had to be taken by monday the 2nd still, but then she went to check on it and came back and said that the deadline for the wall hesi was also moved to the 23rd.....what a relief!!

It's very weird ... Bc you submit your application without entering HESI scores ... And that means you can take it until the deadline but when I went to register it only showed njcu avaibility till feb 6 on the calendar .. Hopefully they fixed if giving you the option to register GOOD LUCK I am applying to jersey city !

Hi everyone. I am new to this site and it's comforting to know this forum exists! I am applying to the Jersey City campus. Here is my experience so far... I apologize in advance if my post is too long lol.

First of all, for those who havent taken the HESI yet, here are some important pointers that I know would be very helpful (has nothing to do with the contents exam itself). I am from nj and I took the HESI in NYC. Make sure you give yourself enough time to get to the location with 30 mins to spare. My schedule was at 9:30 and I got to the city at 8:30. Since I had time, I made sure to eat breakfast at a coffee shop. Make sure you eat something beforehand! Taking that test takes a lot of energy out of you and believe you me, you will be hungry after finishing that exam. I started heading to my building at 8:50 but didn't get there until 9:15 because I went the wrong direction. Make sure you have your state ID/license/passport. It is needed to verify that you are scheduled for that day to even enter the premises. Avoid wearing a watch or any other type of jewelry. They're going to ask you to take it off anyway and they will scan you with a metal detector. You cannot bring a calculator. Had I known this, I wouldn't have bought a simple $6 calculator from the drug store. However, there is a calculator on the screen, but it was annoying to use because you can't use the number keypad. You had to click with your mouse. They will give you a key for a locker to put your belongings in. Know your Elsevier password. I actually knew my password, but the computer I was on the first time couldn't recognize the password I was putting in. Review at least a month before. I actually only reviewed for a week, which I highly don't recommend. Finally, PACE YOURSELF! You will see why in the next few paragraphs.

I took the HESI on Feb 4 and passed with a composite score of 84%. However, I didn't do well in the Science sections :( Bio was 76 and A&P was 68. Math was 96, Vocab was 90, reading comp was 88 and Grammar was 88. I did use the Elsevier HESI A2 3rd edition and it was pretty much redundant for those the science sections. I made the very stupid mistake of not reviewing from my old books or using other references online, and ended up not being able to answer some simple questions. It was, however, very useful for the Math, Vocab, Reading Comprehension and Grammar.

The first section I did was reading comp since I knew this would take me the longest and I've always had difficulty with reading comp. it was 55 questions and I took my sweet sweet time and over an hour later, I was very thankful to get the 88! My advice would be to skim the questions first before reading the passage to get an idea of what you should be looking for. Next was Math which was. 55 questions. I actually love math, so I had fun answering the questions. Know your fractions (conversions, additions, subtractions, etc), ratio equations, conversions (mm to mL and vice versa), percentages, decimals to fractions and vice versa, etc. By the time I finished math, I think only had 2 hours left, so panic started to kick in. I knew I still had 2 hours left and didn't know if that was enough time to finish. So I continued onto Vocab for another 55 questions. I did this section pretty quickly. Again, because I started to panic about the time. I believe I finished in about 20 minutes. Had I paced myself, I think I would have gotten a higher score. Study the words from the Elsevier book! I would say about 70-80% of the words can be found from the book. Other words were common sense or familiar words from everyday life. The with the Grammar section (I think it was also 55 questions), I also rushed through it. Ok, pretty much from this point on I rushed through all the remaining sections. Again, the Elsevier book was very helpful. Know the your parts of speech, homonyms, etc. Then..... Dun dun dun!! Came the two science sections. They were 30 questions each and I finished each section in under 15 minutes. By the time I finished my HESI, I had 20 minutes left. In my opinion, I bombed the science sections. But.... I can only hope for the best at this point.

I have a cumulative GPA of 2.6 with a BS Bio degree from 2011 and a 3.7 GPA for the pre-reqs. Hopefully, that's enough to get in. I'm trying to stay positive, but it's difficult knowing that I scored so low in the Science sections of the HESI. I'm also hoping that they will highly consider the essay, recommendations, and resume section of the application.

Anyone else who is willing, can you please share your stats so we can all compare? I wish everyone luck!!!

Alexandra T - Best of luck on your HESI today!! I did receive e-mails confirming when my transcripts were uploaded to my app, but unfortunately NursingCAS is unable to verify for you if your application actually MADE it there (before being uploaded). I would try either having those transcripts sent out again, just to be safe, or to call NursingCAS () to try to see what is going on!

Peterman - Hopefully you are/were able to get that HESI situation figured out!

koala_rawrs - Welcome to AN and to this thread! I think everyone has a pretty good shot at the program. (If only we knew how admissions weighed each component :nailbiting:) Good luck!

Hi everyone!! I'm new here and I'm having a very big problem. I need some advice. I want to apply to njcu absn (jersey city) program for 2015 fall. I have undergrad GPA of 3.4, I did a masters in microbiology from Umdnj GPA of 3.6 and my hesi overall was an 88. My prereqs are a 3.7/3.8 (not quite positive) but a&p 2 is 6 years old which I called and they told me they will accept the grade for it.

The hesi is my problem. I scored a 92 on every subject except anatomy. I didn't have time to prepare for the hesi and I didn't realize how rusty (and I mean RUSTY) I was on the topics covered in undergrad a&p 2. I scored a 68. I know. I'm cringing. My master's unfortunately was micro, so I haven't seen a&p 2 for over 5 years. I'm afraid it's really late in the game to try to take the hesi again before the deadline. Do you all think that I will automatically be denied with this even though my overal is an 88?

I know this may be a "duh" question for most of you, but their site says "overall hesi score" is what they consider and I want to make sure I'm not sinking myself into a ditch here, because of this one subject I flopped on.

I really wish I had more time to dedicate to a&p but I was in the middle of IVF and retaking prereqs because all my undergrad classes were over 10 years old, so I took two weeks and sort of just looked over the basics for the hesi.

What at do you think? Should I still apply? Or is this one subject going to get me a rejection since it is a&p?

I feel horrible.

LovingOnce - Of course you should still apply!!! Aside from your A&P HESI score, the rest of your credentials sound amazing. You shouldn't let one score discourage you from applying. Look at me for example, I am in a far worse situation than you and I am still applying!

Hello everyone! I was hesitant about applying because I've been out of school for so long.. but I took the Hesi last week and did well. So now I have to get my application in ASAP. For letters of recommendation, do you guys think it's important that the person writing the reference physically sign it? Because since everything is done online, it seems like a hassle to ask my supervisor to sign it, scan it, and then upload it. What do you guys think? Should I ask them to do that?

Sorry, one more question... Did you guys upload your Hesi test score in the Documents section? I tried but it won't accept my pdf file... and although there is a note about that at the bottom of the page, I still don't know how to format it. I did enter my scores in the Academic History-Standardized test score section.

Would you be able to let me know how to apply for HESI A2? What are the steps? I have not logged in this site and it never gave me updates so I thought the thread went dead. Thank you.

Or is it too late to take the HESI A2?

Tine-Marie, I am not allowed by this website to send a response for I was not active. I have a long mail to you but can't send.

I got it! and responded :)
