Night shift and daylight savings....

Nurses General Nursing

So at the hospital where I used to work, night shift does not get paid for the "extra hour" on "Fall Back" time change. They also don't get shorted the hour they don't have to work in the spring on "Spring Forward" day. So if you happened to work last night, but didn't work that day in the spring...I guess you are SOL.

How does your place handle it?

We get overtime pay for that extra hour and anything beyond that if need be.

It seems pretty cut and dry to me. Any employer who gives 8 hours of pay for 9 hours of work is breaking the law. Period.

We have the best of both worlds. We get paid for the extra hour in the fall, and we get paid for our full shift in the spring even though it's an hour less. I'll tell you, though, even knowing I was making extra money that extra hour was awful.

Easy we follow labor law: Double time after 12 consecutive hours.[/quote']

What state do you work in???? No double time in this state, ever and you get paid overtime after 40 hours a week, not per shift.

I worked the Saturday night shift when clocks turned back...got one hour of overtime pay. But man, 13 hours was LOOOOONG!!

I'm in California.

No DT at all? Yikes.

We go DT after 12 in a day and 1.5x after 40 in the week.

DT after 12 makes those 16's much easier... and the occasional double-shift, cha-ching!!

This is how my old job was. My new job pays for the 13 hours, but you have to take PTO in the spring for the missing hour.

Realize that RNs in CA have it much better than the rest of us...

I do know, and I don't take it for granted.

I sometimes shake my head in amazement when I read about the conditions under which many nurses labor.

Yeah, I've never gotten paid double. Only time and a half after 40 hours. So if I worked 16 hours instead of 12 I might not get any overtime at all, as long as it only added up to 40 hours. I'd probably volunteer for 16 hour shifts all the time if it was double pay!!

Shoot I have never received double time either. No O/T unless over 40. And you better bet I would be a stick in their butt if I didn't get paid and I wasn't on the schedule for the next time change.

Double time after 12 hours in cali. I'm sure it's a state law as my company is pretty cheap and wouldn't pay that voluntarily.
