Night shift and clinicals

Published

I work 11p-7a 5 nights a week. I'm also in nursing school 4 evenings a week and an 8 hour shift of clinicals on Saturdays. One of the nights I work is Friday night so I go straight to clinicals after work. My instructor told me that this is not allowed and she would have to call the board of Nursing and let them know but she would pretend she hadn't heard that. I'm wondering if this is actually true...let me know if anyone had any idea if it is.

Yeah I'm not saying anything and if they ask I'll just have to tell them I don't.. unfortunately I can't sacrifice those hours of work. I'd love to lol. I definitely don't wanna work all night and go to clinical all day lol. But hey as a single parent I have to do what I have to do. Thank you for the advice. And I I'll definitely be keeping my mouth shut about working Friday nights

Amy, you sound like one of my classmates whom I kind of know. He worked a lot. he would go straight to work after clinical (we had night clinical for med surg) and meet us in the morning for lecture at 8.

you guys work really hard and I'm sure it will work out. Just remember to take care of yourself!

Lol i try to remember that. But I'll sleep when I get home for a few hours and go back to work that night. It's only for a short while and that's what I stay focused in...the end game. Better career and better life for me a my kiddo :) all around happier lol

You do what you have to. I wouldn't say a word about what and when you are working to anyone. Your prof sounds like a PITA and might have a target on you. Good luck with the semester

At my local community college their policy is you can't work the 8 hours prior to clinical and it's an automatic F is they find out you have. You might want to really look into your school's policy.

Yeah I'm thinking it's school policy but I worked last night and was at clinicals all day. It wasnt too bad. Back at work again tonight and now the exhaustion is kicking in. But all in all wasn't too bad. I'll just have to keep that info to myself

This is why I am a proponent of keeping my mouth shut. I think that the world of social media makes people feel as though they have to share everything. School at school, work at work, it only becomes someones business when you blab it. Let this be an example when you move into your first job. I hope it works out for you.

I didn't blab it as you so eloquently put it lol. I was talking with my one close friend in my class...and she happened to overhear it. So yeahhhh. Anyway it did work out. So thanks for the advice.

I haven't started my program yet, but we have that policy in our orientation booklet.

I'm thinking it's school policy not something the board of Nursing would care about

Why don't you read your nursing programs student handbook? If it's school policy, it's in there. And that would tell you what the possible repercussions are.

Is it possible to trade your Friday shift with someone until this clinical is done? It's something I'd be looking into.

The difference may be if you are coming in from work unprepared. Clothing not as neat as it should be. Being late even occasionally. I worked like you on 3rd shift. I made arrangements with my supervisor to leave work early enough to make sure I was dressed and prepared. Wishing you a lot of luck with becoming a Nurse.
