Night shift and clinicals

Published

I work 11p-7a 5 nights a week. I'm also in nursing school 4 evenings a week and an 8 hour shift of clinicals on Saturdays. One of the nights I work is Friday night so I go straight to clinicals after work. My instructor told me that this is not allowed and she would have to call the board of Nursing and let them know but she would pretend she hadn't heard that. I'm wondering if this is actually true...let me know if anyone had any idea if it is.

It's not allowed because of patient safety. Each state boards has their own rules. You will be up all night working then report to clinical and and expected to to learn with no sleep. No offense but I wouldn't want you around my family after a double especially as a student. It's just not safe. She has a duty not only to report you to the school but also to the board if you operating unsafely.

If it is contrary to a written policy you are risking the repercussions such as suspension to dismissal from the program. Find the policy, read the policy, and follow the policy to the letter-the money is not worth your future. If there is a problem, any problem at all and you are not following the policy, the program administration can use the policy to against you. Not worth it!!!!!

I was working evening shift 3-11 on a Friday and had clinical the following morning. Clinical was at 7 and but due to my commute I was getting up at 5 am. Of course I wouldn't call asleep right away so I would really only get 2-3 hours. That made for a long Saturday. I always got through clinical ok but I switched my schedule for this semester. Driving while tired can be very dangerous. I caught myself drifting more than I would like to care to admit. Could you work a double some other day?
