Night Nurses-Pts think we sleep?

Published

I work 1800-0700 on a surgical floor. I am amazed at how many patients think we actually sleep at night. :icon_lol: I've even had them apologize for "waking me", and "gee, honey, I hope you can get some sleep." Explaining to them doesn't usually change their perception.

Not a biggie, but surprised me when it first happened.

I worked as a supervisor in LTC and had to go around waking people up, especially the ones that were snoring. Of coorifice they denied that they were sleeping.

Can you tell me what this ......0.35 and 0.25 for total of 0.6.....means?

Probably FTE's (full time equivalents)

i work at a LTC facility and i do the 3-11/ 11-7 shift and some people Mostly CNA's (although nurses do too) sleep. I personally find that hard to do with the call bells constantly ringing and patients constantly wanting PAIN meds! But more importantly if I happen to fall asleep I feel like crap when i go to pass meds so i steer clear of the sleeping route!

Sooooooo, why are they not reported and/or fired?

It was my understanding when I applied for night shift that we would mainly be drinking and playing cards all night.

They won't let us drink at work anymore! They take all the fun out of everything! :rotfl:

:balloons: :chuckle They let me drink "Coffee"

I work Acute care, and if you are on my floor near the desk, you would wish we slept. We move around so much taking calls, assessing, admitting, catching falling confused pt's, ect. that pt's are in no doubt that we are all awake.

Just like evryone has said, it isn't just the patients who think that. How often I have heard how easy we have it on night shift. I have just as much paper work, just as many meds and usually 3 more pts. Gotta luv 'em

I work the midnight shift at a hospital. I too get the I am sorry to wake you. These people will even fall in the floor instead of ringing the call light because they don't want to bother anyone. You can tell me otherwise but sometimes it just doesn't do any good at all.

I've had day shift staff state that all we do is sit or sleep at night. During my 12 hour shift I average 6 miles. I must be sleep walking.

This whole thread just kinda amazed me. I have worked nights for about 25 yrs. I can't sleep anytime but daytime.Everytime I had to come in for any kind of inservice the daylight just killed me and I could not stay awake until almost time to go home (around 3-4 pm). Vacations are a hard for me too. I just cannot stay awake enough to have a good time so we usually go to Vegas. Different gigs for different figs I guess.
