Do any of you school nurses write a newsletter or bulletin to the parents/faculty at your school? If so, what topics do you include?
Thanks!

We have a monthly school newsletter for parents - my principal likes us to write a little blurb each month. I have several little articles, bits of information, school policy stuff etc that I rotate thru each month/year. Some of my topics - Welcome back to school with info regarding immunizations & district medication policy; 5th grade camp reminders/policies; bike safety; importance of breakfast; cold/flu info; District health policy; reminders of when to keep your student home; lice info; obesity; Kindergarten round up immunization information; End of year stuff - reminders to pick up student meds/clothing etc.
I also share a hallway bulletin board with the counselor - we post general health information; community info - flu shot clinics/immunization clinics etc.

Nope. The PTA doesn't ask for my opinion or tips of information. They are the ones who design and distribute the letter each month. I also do not have a bulletin board to use. I am in a room that is located in the middle of kindergarten pods at the back of our building. I'm pretty much out of sight. :-) Can't complain.

In my last school, the school office is in-charged of sending newsletter. But my current school let me handle almost everything when it comes to health/nursing. I send out health/medication policy at the beginning of the school year, reminders when to send a student to the nurse, fact sheet of communicable diseases, etc. Also have my bulletin board inside and outside my room. Right now I'm planning of putting something interesting that follows the health awareness calendar.
There are other issues I dont like but still happy to be at my school right now :)

I try to avoid newsletters at all costs. There are some parents that will look at the student handbook, school websites, electronic announcements, etc and inform themselves regardless of a newsletter. My old and bitter self thinks the majority of the newsletters go into the trash with no attention paid to them by the majority of parents. I've tried to get my school to stop sending them home and replace them with important announcements printed on the report cards but to no avail. In this day and age of media communication, if there is a parent out there that doesn't realize it's important to wash your hands, my newsletter isn't going to do them any good!!

I do a monthly staff newsletter. Each month has a health topic section based on seasonal stuff or national health observances, a calendar of local health related events, 1-2 recipes & a couple of quotes.
I go on announcements every week & do a quick info session for the kids. I also usually share out coordinated info digitally on my school social media accts & in our campus weekly digital newsletter. I usually do one or the other of those depending on the depth of the content.
WOW! Thank you all for your great responses! We have an online resource board parents and faculty can go on and choose their topics. I was thinking of doing a Nurses Corner or Nurses Notes. Thanks for all your ideas!
