Stony Brook

U.S.A. New York

I am *supposed* to start a PhD program at Columbia in the fall, but I am really draggin my feet. Not so sure I want to live in the city at all. I am a traveler for the moment and my agent just called me about some NY positions, including Stony Brook.

I looked it up- and it doesn't seem too far from the city?

and the hospital looks alright too.

Anyone working there?

Am I crazy to think about commuting from Stony Brook to Columbia?

If you are new to NYC, I would not suggest communing from StonyBrook to Columbia. I am guessing that the drive is more than 30 miles each way, and with NY traffic, that is A LOT of stress. Check the distance on mapquest just to be sure.

I was under the impression that I could commute by train and use the subway, never want to be driving in NYC...too expensive.

Trust me, Stoneybrook is more then 30 miles from Columbia. But you are right, you don't need the drive nor the NYC parking expenses.

Take the Long Island RailRoad to Penn Station. There is a train station near the hospital. Then take the subway to Columbia.

Thanks Kathleen!!!!!!

I guess I'm on my way... obviously not as a traveler...permanent staff...Oh My... well, I suppose plenty of changes are on the way.

FYI - If you take the LIRR to Penn station it is about a 2 hour ride and peak tickets are $13 each way. Then you have to factor in the time it will take you to catch the subway to Columbia. Just something to think about.

:uhoh3: Thats a little too long.

Any recommendations on a nice place to live, with a shorter commute into the city?

My family live in Holbrook, which is about 60 miles from Brooklyn. It is really not that far, miles wise, from Brooklyn into the city, but the traffic on the Belt Parkway will kill you. You could live in Brooklyn, or maybe Staten Island. My cousins live in Staten Island. I am not sure what neighborhoods are good these day. In Brooklyn, you could probably try Bensonhurst or Bay Ridge. They were all Italian neighborhoods when I lived there, and fairly safe. But they are right, it will be a long commute on the Long Island Railroad into Penn Station, but it would be worse if you drive. From Stoneybook, it is even longer. It is even farther east than Holbrook. Hope that helps.

I would suggest that you think about how long you want to commute. From Stonybrook to NYC - Penn Station will probably be a minimum of one hour on the train if it is an express PLUS, you are looking at probably twenty minutes by subway, I believe, to Columbia.

The best bet would be to look for some place in Queens. Check the subway lines, maybe you can by pass the LIRR and just take the subway.

Stony Brook is 90 minutes from the city by train. And over one hour driving time. Been there and done that too many times to count. Not something that I would want to do on a frequent basis, though I met people on the train that did it on a daily basis. You could look at it as a way to get all of your homework done during the commute. But that would be three hours each day that you were doing it.
