It's common. Every other weekend is pretty standard from what I've seen. Remember, that's the hardest time to schedule staff (apart from nightshift any day of the week), so making it part of your contract from the start is the norm.
It's really not a big deal; you can always use vacation time, personal time, or switch with a colleague if you need certain days off.
It was a bit of a shocker to find that it is common in NY-especially the part where there isn't a weekend differential. In another State, weekends were reserved for those with seniority because the differential was over $6/h, in addition to the shift differential.
Nursing homes often have weekend differentials, just not the hospitals. Eves/nights, yes, weekends: no. Then again, whenever they're shorthanded, there's premiums and super premiums for calling you in to cover.

There's a differential in NY in most hospitals. Most have the differential. And everyone pretty much requires every other weekend.

Is this true? Is there a hospital in NY that has every third weekend? Every other weekend is kind of too much isn't it?
