New Years Eve 2023

What is your favorite holiday shift to work?

Least favorite?

Why?

Specializes in Psych, Addictions, SOL (Student of Life).

I am not working today - but I am working tomorrow.

I don't really like to work Holidays but totally understand why we have to. When I was young (13) the father of a friend owned a diaper service and we washed the diapers on holidays. "Babies don't stop pooping cause it Christmas" Nor do people stop getting sick. I think I like Thanksgiving best because for years I had it off, so could really get into it with family and such.

Night shift /12hrPM on holidays/ Evening prior holiday for many years --often less stressful with decreased census as triedto get everyone home for the holiday.

Worked from home for 1hr today approving online aide education courses as 12hrs yearly due by 12/31/23 per PA state home care agency regs --after hundreds of phone calls to get oldest employees compliant.

@hppygr8fulAgree! Love that analogy, because it's so true. I personally always chose to work NYE first, thanksgiving second, and did my darndest not to work Christmas Eve. Italian family so the seven fishes on Christmas eve is our biggest holiday.  The first and only year I decided to sacrifice Thanksgiving for NYE to ring in the new year with some live music instead of work .... was 2020. Give me NYE every time LOL!

Thanksgiving to get into it with family --  that's great!

@NRSKarenRN Night shift holiday was always my favorite too!  Oh they need to change that to like 1/7! Bahumbug PA ! Strong work getting everyone complied though!

I didn't mind working holidays too much but now I like the perks of not needing to work them at all.  When I worked LTC a  stretch of a few years being scheduled Thanksgiving,  Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day kind of sucked. The only holiday I consistently started taking time off for was July 4th and though not a holiday July 5th. The neighborhood fireworks keeps me awake way too late for waking up the next morning to be fun.  I never cared if I worked New Years day but this year was awful. I volunteered to work the floor Jan 1 and my goofy neighbors kept me up half the night with the fireworks and loud party. Lucky if I got 3 hours sleep that night.

Specializes in Nurse Leader specializing in Labor & Delivery.

Favorite - Christmas - in L&D, triage is always dead on Christmas.
Least favorite - not exactly a holiday, but the switch between DST and standard time, and vice versa. It *** everything up, especially if twins are delivering. It's complicated to chart when Twin B appears to have been delivered before Twin A.

That's funny. I never would have thought of that complication!

I worked day shift New Years Eve and fell asleep before midnight but was off the next day.

My favorite holiday to have off is Thanksgiving.  My parents always came down to visit me here in Florida and we'd either go out or I'd make something at home.  Now they are too frail to travel but I still enjoy Thanksgiving with the part of my family that's here or just me and my best friend.

I have worked all but two Christmas's the last 30 years.  I let the people that really want that day off to have it.  I don't care about Christmas at all.

That's awesome. I love how we all have different preferences making it so most can have their preferred holiday off.
