New TV Commercial...

Ok, on to something new...

I have recently seen a new commercial on TV... for the Plan B!

I know this is a VERY controversial issue, I'm just curious where we, as a community of nurses or nurses - to - be, stand on this issue - especially advertising it on TV???

Please, remember to be nice - NO personal attacks, just professionals speaking as so.

Have you ever been into a Planned Parenthood? This is not what they do, at all.

I have been to PP - As a teenager, before I knew what they were. I was an orphan who needed a GYN visit & didn't have a doctor as I went to boarding school for high school. The way I quoted was exactly what I experienced, not to mention VERY painful.

That is unfortunate that happened. I'm sorry to hear about it. :( For most people though, that is not the experience they have. I myself have been, and many friends as well and have never had to go through what you did. Must have been a bad clinic, or a bad day at that clinic.

Sorry that this is way off topic, kinda...but our phys teacher was a riot talking about the viagra advertising. He was going on about the "see your doc if you have an erection for more than 4 hours". Yes, there should be a limit to how drugs are advertised. This sort of disclaimer comes on at prime time and it is so not for young age consumption.

It's ok, not your fault by any means. :wink2: I am glad that most people have a better experience than I had. Unfortunately I know many other people who have had the same, if not worse experiences. One of the clinics mis-diagnosed ovarian cancer in my Aunt, she had to have a very unnecessary hystorectomy. Good news is she had 2 beautiful daughters before this happened. BUT - that's not to say that they were bad clinics, bad dr's and bad days... everyone has them. I am just personally not a fan of the Planned Parenthood clinics.

Well, according to advertisements, Plan B, is not an abortion drug. It can help prevent pregnancy but and I quote "will not terminate a current pregnancy".

Plan B is emergency contraception. It is Not an abortion pill. It cannot terminate a pregnancy.

Like Steph had mentioned, it all matters on how you define pregnancy.

we can't always disagree with things and declare it wrong. it doesn't matter where i stand on the issue, it is a woman's right to choose.

men get to choose, believe me my daughters father did! his contraceptive was the front door and he used it. left us high and dry.

things happen. if there are things out there to help woman in a situation that they cannot handle, than they should be able to know about it.

every woman is different and will decide in her heart what is best. even with all of the advertising and advice that i got, i made the decision that was best for me, i had a beautiful baby girl :)

but will i get angry at the woman that didn't make the same choice as me? absolutely not. because i know how scary that decision was to make.

As far as these 'planned parenthood' type places... those are a whole nother hot topic with me. You are right, they shove a brown paper bag in your hand with condoms and plan B - and sometimes you will be lucky enough to get a couple of pamphlets! No explination at all!

This simply is NOT true. For years I went to Planned Parenthood for my routine women's care. They were affordable, on time, and always had flexible appointment scheduling. They were always so good to me and spent ample time talking to me about all my birth control options, as well as my health in general. I have never had any private physicians spend so much time in the office with me. My body has had a hard time with many kinds of birth control, and they guided me through many options. Most options, my friends who went to private OB's never knew about, like Lunelle, Nuva Ring, etc. Nice places for women's care, if you ask me.

I wasn't saying it is true for ALL clinics... just my personal experiences and those of people I know. Not meant to stomp on anyone's toes.

yeah when I was in highschool I found them to be very informative also. They didnt lay on guilt trips and supported education. I had friends who got the plan B several times in a month, and PP counseled them and didnt allow them to have a certain amount during a certain time period. but the wait was 4-8 hrs hehe

And I'm agreeing with you - the example I gave of my daughter's experience is true and was at a Planned Parenthood Clinic.

Obviously not all experiences will be the same. We just had this same conversation - about how everyone can talk about a bad or good experience with the same doc or mortuary (I'm in hospice).

I am concerned that my daughter and her friends were NOT given ANY education - just had a brown paper bag pushed into their hands as they left the clinic.

And I still believe that this drug, by not allowing a fertilized egg to implant, causes the death of a human being and that unique soul goes to heaven.

Just like someone else said . ." . .. When we admit that there are shades of grey . .. " or differences of opinion, we can respect each other.

by the way, and i just have to mention it...

i find it alarming that the same people who would possibly applause me for not having an abortion, are getting angry with me because i am a single mom and receive help from the government...

i kind of feel confused as to which way a person should go..?

why can't we all just accept each others rights and decisions?

i am in no way trying to start an argument, i am just trying to put things into perspective. it's a touchy subject for me because i have been there.

because most people who gripe about other people's lives truly do not care to take the time to think critically about how complex some of life's decisions are. life is grey and some people don't have the intelligence to realize that.:banghead:
