Ok, on to something new...
I have recently seen a new commercial on TV... for the Plan B!
I know this is a VERY controversial issue, I'm just curious where we, as a community of nurses or nurses - to - be, stand on this issue - especially advertising it on TV???
Please, remember to be nice - NO personal attacks, just professionals speaking as so.

I truly don't think it should be advertised...if a woman is seeking this option, it should be part of a discussion with a doctor, not something that could be ordered at an online pharmacy.
But then again, I don't think abortion needs to be made easier...this is a life that is ending, and the more convenient science makes it, the more casual people may become about it.

oh lord.... here we go....
if we are speaking professionally, we as nurses are nonpartisan and nonjudgemental, and are there to support our patients in whatever decision they are to make even if we don't agree with it.

Agreed - If abortion is made easy it is opening up a whole gammit of other issues. From casual sex to std's. Agreed also that it should be a private decision, and not so convent to get.

I see no problem with it. It's FDA approved, so it's makers should have no less right to advertise it than Viagra's makers do. You still need to see a doctor to get it, and abortion is a legal right...
But I do see why pro-lifers would have concerns with it. It too, is their right to have those opinions. But as long as abortion is legal, they should stay just that...opinions.

Well, according to advertisements, Plan B, is not an abortion drug. It can help prevent pregnancy but and I quote "will not terminate a current pregnancy".
I for one don't see a problem with the advert. It sure beats the heck out of having a ton of scared, unhealthy women running around pregnant w/o medical treatment. Adverts are made everyday for condoms and the like. I don't consider this abortion (as it doesn't actually cause an abortion), but emergency contraception. Maybe women will use it and we won't have as many abandoned babies, or unhealthy unwanted babies. And I hate to say it, but it needs to be said. This could be a cost-saving measure for all parties involved. And it's not always you're fault that you are in a position where you may become pregnant. I can't say wat I would or wouldn't do cuz you never really know until you're put in that position.

Oh, and to clarify...Plan B is offered OTC, but you do have to be 18 to get it and it can only be obtained from a pharmacist.

Plan B is emergency contraception. It is Not an abortion pill. It cannot terminate a pregnancy.
When you start seeing ads for plans J, K, L, or M, that's when the pro-lifers should worry.

I'd rather see commercials for condoms, which help protect against STDs....or how's this one....abstinence! I know, I know....the abstinence one will never happen, but hey.

They won't show abstinence commercials because literally every scientific study has shown that abstinence only education has the exact opposite of the intended effect.
Doesn't sound helpful to me!

I feel there is nothing wrong with advertising it on television. If women are not informed about such methods that exist how will they ever know? If we were to remove it from televsion you'd have to remove the condom ones as well. Yes, we do not see spermacides and female condoms shown on television, but part of the problem exists when people are not educated. As nurses (me being a future nurse) it is our responsability to provide people with knowledge about avaiable options. Plan B is NOT the same as abortion....

I'm totally against all prescription drug ads on TV. I think they are unethical. They used to be forbidden, I'm not sure when that changed, but everytime I see a drug ad I cringe.
