New.thrifty ADN student paying for school. Is this to much?

Hi ! My wife and I are both starting our first semester monday! I'm a new college student and am a little shocked by the price of education! If it were'nt for my GI bill I don't think we could pay for school. I always like to get the "best deal" on something. Is this to high for school? Or am I just to stingy?

I did the same thing (private school) and pay just close to $20,000/year. I think nursing school is worth it no matter how much you pay.

That being said....I love loans!

Thanks for the reassurance, I needed it. Any comment I have ever gotten it.....I payed such and such for mine etc. Yeah, wish I lived there too. LOL!

Thanks, you rock

As long as that is for the whole program, and not just 1st semester as it looks like then, well, you're just being stingy. lol

(Try computing the cost of a university! OUCH!!!)

Anyway, tell me if it's none of my business, but why is your wife going for LPN & you RN?

Anyway, good luck!!!!! (Congrats on having some type of money to go to school, congrats on your decision go go back to school, and congrats on your future RN and LPN statuses! :chuckle

Well, if I remember the other thread Hotdogdg posted on, Both he and the missus applied for the RN program, but she did not get in. He debated going through the LPN program with her, because they wanted to be in the trenches together, but I think the folks heer convinced him not to give up his spot in the RN program since they could still study together and would be learning a lot of the same stuff. His wife will be getting her RN later.

WHEW!!! That was a mouthful ....

Yes, I do actually pay attention to what people write. heheh :lol2:

When you start knowing people's life story. it's time to log off allnurses.

Sunnyjohn is right!! The nursing director put me on the spot on deciding which program I was attending. I decided that it would be wrong if I didn't go RN. Hopefully my wife will bridge and we will end up finishing the second year together anyways. :balloons: :smiley_aa

Wow, that seems like a lot to me! I'm attending a two year program, and have my pre-req's done. Here is what I paid (well, pell grants paid) this semester:

Tuition 12 hours: $656

Books/kit: $594

Uniform/steth/shoes: $297

TOTAL $1547

Next 3 semesters, my tuition will be the same $656, books will be about 200/semester, and I shouldn't have to buy another uniform. Well, actually I will, I'm pregnant now and bought large pants, so next semester I'll spend about $60 to buy 2 smaller pairs.

I chose a community college, as a ADN is an ADN, and we all take the same test (cc vs. university). KWIM? I'll fast track to my BSN in a year or so after I start as a RN.

Good luck to both you and your wife!

Seems high too me. It took me 3 semesters to finish my LPN and it only cost me a TOTAL of about 1000 per semester (3000) plus 1000 for books..... so a total of 4000 for the whole thing.

Now I'm enrolled in the R.N. program (ASN) that's only going to take 4 semesters, this semester only cost me 667 plus 177 for books, and the next 3 will be about a 1000 per semester.

I don't think I would have finished school if I had to pay what you're paying. What you are paying for your first semester would pay for my LPN and R.N. education combined. GOODNESS!

NurseMommyof3- Where are you in AR? I'm in Branson.

Try $915.00 per credit for a private university connected to the hospital!

Well, for my ADN program I have paid:

1st sem.

Insurance Liability Fee Low $15.00

Nursing Testing Fee $50.00 (HESI)

Processing Fee - Fall Term $5.00

Student Services Fee - Fall $30.00

Fall General Tuition & Reg $504.00

Total Term Charges: $604.00

Plus $300 for books (cover both first and second semester)

Second, third and 4th semesters are $470.50 + books (I paid $120 in books this semester)

So, I pay about $2300 for the entire program, books, supplies, testing fees and insurance.

Wow! I can't believe what a huge price range there is between schools. I guess what I've learned from this thread is private schools in general are high priced, BUT theres no waiting list go get in.

I am paying just about the same for my ADN. I go to a small private college and it's a new program, so I am getting a lot of negative comments. Like, I would never pay that much and I wouldn't go there until they have been around awhile. Whatever! I am following my dream and what I've found out is, it isn't cheap and it isn't easy, but it is well worth it to me. I wish the wait for a community college wasn't so long, I can't afford to wait 3yrs, I'm no spring chicken so I am doing what is right for me.

Blessings to you and your wife!

WoW, where is all this waiting I keep hearing about coming from? I go to a community college and I didn't have to wait at all for the LPN program (probably because I started an R.N program at another school, so I had credits) and I actually registered late and I got directly in without having to take the PSB. And the R.N (ASN) program, I just have to wait 1 semester but that's only because the LPN to ASN program starts in the summer so I'm using this semester to take me last pre-reqs and taking the next semester off. No way in heck would I wait 3 years either... I'd definitely have to come up with the money for a private school... GEEZ.

Thanks for the reassurance, I needed it. Any comment I have ever gotten it.....I payed such and such for mine etc. Yeah, wish I lived there too. LOL!

Thanks, you rock

Number of years the local community college told me I had to wait before starting their program: 5

Number of years it took for them to tell me they had a spot available: 3

Number of years my current program is: 2.5

Number of semesters left: 1

Difference in price between the local community college and my current program: too much

Coming onto allnurses and realizing that I'm not the only one crazy enough to pay such an obcene amount of money for a degree: PRICELESS

Jess - You rock, too!!!!!
