  1. I am 31 years old and going back to school to get my second bachelor's degree. Starting to think that I am becoming a career college student! So we're not alone, there are a lot of us who are later in life decide to go into nursing. Before we avoided it because of whatever reason, mine was because of my disability. My disabilty is hearing impaired and kidney transplant. Tommy
  2. Hello everybody! I am taking a hybrid human anatomy, both on-line and in class. When I went to get my text books I was suprised it was shrink wrapped together in a "package." I got Human Anatomy by Saladin with Online Learing Center for topics covered in the text book. The second book is the Student Study, Human Anatomy, Art Book by Saladin. The third is the Human Anatomy & Physiology along with PhysioEx Online resources, cat version. Meaning we'll be dissecting cats! Meeeeow! With the text books, I got several CD's and several on-line resource that I can consult. Talk about tons of information! The online part of the class is through State University of New York Network Learning. But I am registered through the local community college. Online is where most of the course information are located, assignments, quizzes, exams and etc. The class is just the labs once a week cutting up feline animals. In addition there is an on-campus learning center where they have human models that we can take apart and practice naming different parts. So all this offically starts next Monday, 23rd! Wish me luck and I wish everyone here luck! Keep in touch! Tommy
  3. Just by looking at the patient's chart would tell you whether the patient's on welfare. Usually it's right in front where the insurance information is located, private insurer, medicaid, medicare and/or self-pay. I am on medicaid/medicare because of my renal transplant/disability. I can see how easy is to just show up at ED and not worry financially how to pay for the services. I volunteer for ED once a week and we get a couple of welfare cases that would just show up with non-existance medical issue. This explains why cost of maintaining Medicaid is spiraling out of control. Whenever we come into contact with patient's such as this, being demanding, we can do the best we can. The customer is always right even if we can't provide it. Even if the customer is at fault, we have to assume that it was at the fault of the service provider. It's a dog eat dog world out there....beware.... Tommy
  4. I know some MDs that are on anti-depressants!!
  5. I've been a pen pal to a prisoner once before. Being that I am gay, this person in prison is also gay. At the end of the day it is not a good idea to have a relationship with convicts/ex-convicts. I've been there and done that. Being in prison is a very lonely place and any attention from the outside is big deal. Convicts would do anything to woo anyone to write to them and keep writing to them. It is fine to write each other but to develop into some sort of a relationship is not a good idea. My last advice never send money!
  6. Get this, I heard that mental health workers would request off on the night of the full moon! I'll bet this is true with nurses!! Imagine where they got the word LUNA tic from? Tommy
  7. University of Rochester SON is a private institution and VERY EXPENSIVE. I was told that starting this year and expecting next year to have low number of applicants just because of the cost of the program. However, the public university in Buffalo, same kind of program have higher number of applicants just because it cheaper! Tommy
  8. I would check with your State Insurance Department and see what the limit is to be qualified for Medicaid. It helps to check it out for those who have low or no income and are in school full-time. Disabled workers have a benefit where they can qualified for Medicaid Buy-in program but sadly this program is limited to the Social Security Administration rules. Another place to check out is your local Chamber of Commerce where they might have group health/dental insurance that you could buy into. Call the local Blue Cross and Blue Shield or the local insurance carrier for any information where you can get health insurance. Good luck with your search! Tommy
  9. MCC? Is that Monroe Community College? If you're in Rochester, NY MCC has contract with store at the Marketplace Mall where you can buy the scrubs, stethoscopes and etc. The books you buy would be at the bookstore. If you need amplified stethoscope, I would look for electronic stethoscopes. Most majore stethoscopes have them. University of Rochester book store has those and you can try them out. Congradulations and good luck! Tommy
  10. How about young nurses bite the hand that feed them?
  11. Um is this of a sexual nature??
  12. I am on Medicare because of the kidney transplant. I got the 2006 "Medicare & You" book. Some of the premium will be paid by the State because of Medicaid. However, I got a notice from Medicaid that they'll no longer pay for the part B premiums. How dumb can they be? It's much economic sense for them to pay the part B premiums than to pay 100% for medical services! Unless they want me to pay the part B premiums?? It just make your wonder how the gov't keeps running on empty?!?
  13. I am 31 with a B.S. degree in a non-nursing field going back for second B.S. in nursing. Looking to start the accelerated BSN program Spring of 2007 after taking the prerequisites. Tommy
  14. Um I had hemorrhoids but never like that! Had them removed and I was literal pain in the a$$ for the next few weeks! Lord have mercy, a trip to the bathroom was like going into the torture chamber!
  15. I've been a patient myself many times. Do feel at times uncomfortable for asking for the dummest things like ice water. What I've done was to bring a pitcher to the nurse's station and ask for ice water, just to save them a trip. There were times that I did things for my roommates, they were mostly elderly. Simple things like getting them water or warm up their plate in the microwave. I've done all that with an IV in my arm!
