New RPN grad! .. struggles. Not getting any call backs (ontario)

Published

I graduated from the Practical Nursing program @ Mohawk/McMaster (Hamilton, ON). I was previously in the BScN program (don't ask... long story)

I've been apply for jobs since about mid april. Graduated June (officially). Wrote my exam in May - passed. I'm now just waiting on the police check so I can send my registration in.

I'm also taking an ECG intrepretation class then following up with an ACLS course (already registered for both).

I'm not really getting any call backs from employers or really any major feedback. I did get a call back from a summer position- but they wanted me to be licensed (registered).

During my pre-grad.. I thought I networked, and made a good impression. I spoke to the nurse manager, she put my name down and etc. I have applied to a few positions where she is also a nurse manager. I didn't get an interview.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...

All I see are jobs for home care. I currently do not have my own car so that is out of the question.

What if this keeps going on... where I apply apply and apply and don't hear anything back??

Most of my close friends from school have landed jobs at their pre-grad place. I don't know what the heck I'm doing wrong :crying2:

I'm trying to stay positive and I'm praying something comes my way. I just keep comparing myself to everyone and I hate that.

I just want to work as a nurse

Does anybody know of any positions/places looking for RPNs (Hamilton area)

Maybe you can get your resume checked and reviewed? Or you're not pumping out enough resumes all together. I don't know if this is working because I'm still looking for jobs myself, but I make myself send out at least 3 resumes every day (including weekends). I apply for all casual, part time and full time positions.

as do I ...

as do I ...

I am sorry for no call backs yet.

Have you looked at different private health agencies? Look under "shift nurse" rather than "visiting nurse." One of the strategies I've been doing is going on CCAC website and looking at their list of "LTC partners" then applying to those jobs directly.

How about your cover letter? Do you mention that you've passed the CPNE and that you're undergoing registration? I don't know if that helps but it provides an explaination why you picked "Not registered" on online applications to employers . Probably give them an estimated date (i.e., end of july, beginning of august, end of august, etc.) when you'll be officially registered (e.g. police record sypnosis = 10 business day. Assuming you receive it and decide to go to CNO on the same day--CNO registration process = 15 business days... 10 + 15 = 25 business days). Once you get your police check, I suggest you go to CNO directly if you can. The front desk people do it ASAP but you still have to wait 15 business days for your name to show up on the CNO website--that's when you're entitled to practice.

btw, congrats on passing the CPNE! I hope you and I become successful in our job hunt. Keep going. You'll find one sooner or later. I know it's frustrating, because I am in the same position as well. Although, I haven't been aggressive in my job hunt till now. I'm trying to network with some of my classmates who have RN jobs to see if I'm successful that way, if not back to the drawing board I go.

Sorry to jump in to this discussion here; as I have no experience and am just starting out with school. Crazyscrubs...I was hoping you could give me some insight into the program at Momac as I am starting the RPN program in sept. Any tips? Experiences? Things you wish you knew going into program? Is there a scrub colour we must wear? I haven't received any info. yet - and would like to be as prepared as possible. I have puchased a couple text books just to browse and familiarize myself. I greatly appreciate any advice or tips.

Hey :)

the course isn't bad at all. The first yr and 2nd yr (aside from pre-grad) you have to wear a light blue shade of scrubs. I also would invest in a good stethoscope.

as far as books go... I have them all + a ton more.

anything else... feel free to ask

I want to transfer into the mohawk rpn program ...do you know if it is possible. I'm already a first year rpn student..just need two more semesters.

Hey [COLOR=#003366]crazyscrubs, I assume you have found a job already. If not (which I doubt) throw an application in to West Lincoln in Grimsby they are always hiring rpns and rns, even if they are not advertising.

Specializes in NICU.

Hey - where are you doing the ECG course? It's something I'm interested in, but I only see it for RNs. Thanks!

Have you found a job yet? I really liked Hamiliton and I wanted to live and work there. I applied to so meny jobs at all the hospitals but no one called me back.

In the hamilton area hospital network (hhsc or st joes) it seems you really need to know someone or have a connection to get in. I graduated in December and wrote the exam last week...the only people in my class who have jobs got them from their pre grad place... I unfortunately wasn't so lucky. However I do have an interview at one of the hhsc hospitals next week...but it's the only call back I've gotten so far after applying for like 30 jobs...and the only reason I got a call is because I went to the hospital and directly went to the managers office and handed her my resume lol...that's what you have to do if you want to get your foot in the door...go see the managers or email them. Best of luck
