Mohawk College RPN 2012
Very helpful advice starfish and great job answering vintagenurse's questions....I will add that I started in Sept. and am now preparing to enter 3rd semester and we DO attend school throughout the summer. If you do need to make plans to accomodate you throughout the summer I would certainly keep it in the back of your mind; however you will be attending classes approx. 3.5 days/week (as you will be in 3rd semester next summer) Congratulations to you as you embark on a very intense, rewarding program -

Mohawk RPNs- what do you wish you had known before starting the program?
Just a note...in the MoMac program the math component in lab practicum is 100% - so brushing up on basic math is an excellent suggestion ! You write 2 tests of which you must achieve 100%; you are given 3 attempts.

RPN Jan '12 - Mohawk
@starfish...well your organization skills will prove very useful in Jan! I believe the timetable opens for registration in Nov. - not sure if that is just for current or new students; so you will get a chance to pick your schedule and there is some flexibility. Currently, I have computers in nursing, health sciences, health and healing, professional development, lab, and clinical. You need to purchase 1 binder for each course (your timetable may look different - you may have some exemptions or more classes; i.e. I am exempt from communications) The scrubs we need for our program are ciel blue and all white non-slip shoes. As mentioned previously - look into starting your clinical clearances now...this does take a while. Your book list will be extensive; so you may wish to visit the bookstore @mac (Titles) to see the book list for sem 1 and get an idea of cost and #. They don't recommend buying books until you begin (but a good hint is the Canadian Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter and Perry) is ESSENTIAL and something to leaf through to familiarize self with before class actually starts. Any other specific questions, you can feel free to pm me...I think I can respond to them now! :)

RPN Jan '12 - Mohawk
You do need to take your CPR cert. for Health Care Providers - offered through the college, heart and stroke foundation and red cross. You also need to take a mask fit course also offered through CE at college, heart/stroke and red cross. Get your immunization record and your hep b vac. if you are not immune. Your tb skin test is covered in your tuition, but the hep b is not. Start saving up $ for text books as they are quite costly and you need several. Any specific ? just ask...

RPN Jan '12 - Mohawk
Awesome guys...I remember how excited, nervous and full of questions I was when I got my acceptance. And now, during my first clinical rotation, I am still excited, nervous and full of questions! Remember don't give up! Ask ALOT of Good questions - good nurses always ask "Why?" And take these next few months to get everything organized - get your medical clearances, make your child care arrangements, organize a schedule with time for school, study, family (let me know if you figure that one out - I'm still struggling ] It's so much work and new information but alot of fun too!

Ontario- HOAE results? 'Normalized' score?
I am currently an RPN student in the Momac program (collab program with Mohawk and McMaster) When I asked faculty about the "normalized scores" noone was really able to give a good answer. This is the first year that Mohawk required the entrance test. It looks like your results are very similar to mine - better even Good luck and hopefully the wait isn't too long

Ontario- HOAE results? 'Normalized' score?
Sorry forgot my vocational adjustment...81 - normalized 122.16

Ontario- HOAE results? 'Normalized' score?
Ok...I looked up my HOAE results.. Academic Apptitude 67 - Normalized 101.5 Natural Sciences 53 - Normalized 79.93 Reading Comprehension 30 - Normalized uncalc. Spelling 39 - Normalized 58.82 (there was an error with this normalized score) Generally normalized means you did better than that percent of the population taking the same test. Hopefully they are back to work soon and you can get some answers

Anyone applied for January 2012 (RPN program)
Hello Sevillje; I received your inbox message, however, I am unable to respond until I reach 15 posts...almost there! The competition is very fierce for the RPN program, as you know, right now...off hand...I can't remember my entrance averages - the first week has been intense and my head is full of aspetic techniques and bed making, nursing theorists, and anatomy - and I know it will get even more full. BUT I LOVE IT!!! I'm sure the strike will have an impact - and I feel your pain; the wait for the acceptance letter was horrible! Sorry if this post is rambling or disjointed...

New RPN grad! .. struggles. Not getting any call backs (ontario)
Sorry to jump in to this discussion here; as I have no experience and am just starting out with school. Crazyscrubs...I was hoping you could give me some insight into the program at Momac as I am starting the RPN program in sept. Any tips? Experiences? Things you wish you knew going into program? Is there a scrub colour we must wear? I haven't received any info. yet - and would like to be as prepared as possible. I have puchased a couple text books just to browse and familiarize myself. I greatly appreciate any advice or tips.

Mature Male attempting to get into rpn for Jan '12, HELP!
I also applied to Fanshawe in London - but like you, Mohawk was my first choice. I applied in Feb. I was #1 or #2 on waitlist...I got my official letter and offer in May. The opportunities and facilities were a few of the main reasons I chose the program. Keep us posted about your application. :)

Mature Male attempting to get into rpn for Jan '12, HELP!
I think George Brown requires applicants to write the HOAE (which stands for Health Occupations Appitude Exam) - but I may be mistaken. I seem to think too that George Brown does interviews as well?? But again, don't know for certain. I am super excited. The campus at IAHS at Mac looks terrific.

Mature Male attempting to get into rpn for Jan '12, HELP!
Firstly, I applaud you taking the first step of applying. I am starting the RPN program at Mohawk in Sept. I too am a "mature" student - I will be 36 when I start. My entrance marks that they looked at were h/s - math, chem, bio, and english. I re-did my chem and bio to raise my marks. I wrote the HOAE exam for entrance which is given 50% consideration for entrance. So...if your highschool marks are not strong - make sure you prepare, prepare, prepare for you HOAE. I used some prep exam books for the HOAE...and the best one I found was at www.hoae-test.com. I was told by admissions that they receive less intake applications for January than September. So lots of good things in your favour - good luck

Being a Nurse and Mother in Ontario?
I am starting school in Sept. - this is something I have been desperately waiting to pursue for the last 7 years. I decided I wanted to enter nursing...became pregnant with twins and then put my decision on hold. The twins will be entering grade 2 in Sept. and I have spent all of this year preparing them for the change. We talk a lot about how we cherish all the special times we spend together (we also plan and schedule on calendar special "mommy and child" days - even if this means taking a day off school). I like to reminisce verbally about times spent together; it reinforces in both our minds our close bonds. I also make a point about talking to the girls about when I will be away from home I will be helping other people feel better. I deferred my decision until it worked for our family....but I think with planning and making the most of the time you do have with your children (no matter the stage in your life) you can make any return to work/school successful. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!
